On November 19th 4 P.M., a meeting between the General Student Council and the school representatives took place at the Lotus Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to receive explanations regarding the questions of the GSC from President Han Tae-sik (Bogwang). At the meeting, Kim Geon-jung, the vice chairperson of the GSC who has been on the hunger strike for 36 days (based on the 19th), also attended. The meeting was finally made, yet there was no progress.
The GSC had questions on three main issues: the intervention of Jogye Order on the election of 18th president of Dongguk, plagiarized theses of President Han, and Ven Ilmyun Sunim’s charge of theft of national treasures.
During the meeting, when GSC asked about the intervention of Jogye Order, President Han mentioned that Dongguk has a lot of joint named properties with other temples that we don’t actually need. He said, “It would be more beneficial to us if we could get rid of the properties and receive actual cash from the temples. In order to do that, we need the help of the religious order.”
President Han also replied to the plagiarism dispute of his theses. He asserted that except for one paper, he is confident about the rest. He said, “It is not the right way to accuse someone without concrete proofs,” and said that the Research Ethics Honesty Committee is looking over all his papers again to see if there is any problem.
He also said, “Theses I wrote does have some parts of my other papers. However the system catches it as plagiarism even though it is from my own paper.” Previously, the REHC has confirmed that two theses are plagiarized, and other 16 theses are still on its evaluation of self-plagiarism. Also, on the 9.12 GSC-Faculty meeting, the faculty has said that they are organizing a new REHC.
Lastly President Han spoke as less as possible about the charge of theft of Ven Ilmyun Sunim. “The problem of the Board of Directors should be solved internally. It would cause a lot of trouble if the President involves in.”
Choi Jang-hoon, the chairperson of the Student Council of graduate school, commented, “It is nonsensical to say it is not plagiarized because you tried to withdraw the paper. Also, why would
Ven Ilmyun Sunim lie and pretend that nothing happened if the national treasure was stolen? Why are you keep avoiding the essence of the topic?”
Yang Young-jin, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, denounced the students by saying that their attitudes are improper. He said, “I think this discussion is meaningless, since students would not listen to anything we say.”
Kim Sang-kyum, a dean of the Office of Student Affairs wrapped up the meeting by saying “I wish to have this kind of meeting more frequently. I am very concerned of the vice chairperson’s health.” Yet no solution was made, and Kim is still on his hunger strike.
