The International Seon Center has come up with its latest program, Tuesday Lotus Reading Class. The first class took place on April 28th, and it will be held every Tuesday from 5 P.M. to 6:15 P.M. Attendants are expected to gather in Seon Center; if there are less than ten attendants, the class will be held in K318 of Culture Hall with a visible notice outside of the center that informs a change of place. Anyone who is interested in learning Buddhism doctrine is welcomed to join in with no fee.
The purpose of the program is to read Buddha’s words in English and to study an English expression of Dharma through discussion. Kim Young-soo, a program manager of Seon Center, said, “Due to globalization nowadays, monks as well as Buddhists must be capable of explaining Buddhism to foreigners fluently in English.” He then added, “Since most of the Buddhist scriptures are in Chinese character, this program will be a great opportunity for those who want to learn English and experience Dharma in their lives.”
The class will study with “In the Buddha’s Words” by Bhikkhu Bodhi. As seen from the title, the book is a selection of Buddha’s own words while in life, and introduces basic to deep knowledges of Buddhism. There is no instructor or guest speaker since it is a reading class in which the participants freely share their thoughts. Attendants are required to bring their own book and individually read assigned chapter throughout the week. The discussion will be led by program manager Kim as he speaks fluent English.
