"DU will force students to study hard and we will make the campus a center of study. Even though it will challenge them, the students will appreciate it when they see result," President Hong Ki-sam said in a major newspaper. Some students agree with his opinion because a well-developed intellect is important to get a job especially with high unemployment in Korea. But some students don't agree. They say that a good studying atmosphere is more important than being forced to study. For example, students who study in the College of Engineering complain the bad atmosphere for study and research. Even some professors' offices and laboratories are located far from the major lecture building for engineering students. And a shortage of computers and laboratory equipment makes it difficult for students, too.
The School Authority confuses us because they don't seem to know what they are doing. They try to make global campus through exchange programs with our sister universities. Why don't we have a chance to study aboard? Because Donggukians can attend sister universities in proportion to the number of their students attending in DU. But they don't come DU because it has no dormitory, few amenities.
Kyung-hee University has had an office for globalization issues since 1983. And they started an exchange program with China when the Korea government began diplomatic relation in 1992. They have a mid-and long-term and their plan is well prepared. It's very different from DU's preparation.
Next year is the 100th anniversary of DU. How well prepared are they for its 100th anniversary? They has prepared events like seminars, exhibition, publishing DU's history, and ceremonies. It's not enough compared to other universities.
Korea University (KU) had its 100th anniversary last May, too. To celebrate it, they had many events; a goodwill match with their sister university, a performance of a orchestra, held at the World University President Forum, free medical care at their university hospital for a day and, special lectures including one with a Nobel Prize winner.
DU did hold a the ceremony for its vision proclamation in a hotel. The vision showed DU graduating global leaders who ethical sense. This event showed DU's future and many people hoped that this goal would have been fulfilled by more. DU's success as a university is based on preparation.
