The College of Life Science and Biotechnology held a “Biotechnology and Life Science Academy” from July 22th to August 7th, for high school students interested in biotechnology and life science. The participants were about 150 students. Because the College of Life Science and Biotechnology was originally expecting around 90 participants, the program was expanded from three classes to four classes. For three days, each class could learn about life science, biological and environmental science, food science and biotechnology, and medical biotechnology.
The Biotechnology and Life Science Academy covered various subjects including genes and DNA, aromatic components of food, fluorescent proteins, green eco-friendly materials and bio-energy. All subjects were dealt with by both lectures and experiments. It was significant that every lecture and experiment was led by professors and assistants in Dongguk University, not by outside lecturers.
Koo In-hoi from Gyeyang high school, one of participants, gave his impressions, “I wanted to enter Dongguk University. Therefore, I often viewed the Dongguk homepage, and attended this program. It was memorable that flasks are arranged in the laboratory and formulas of the experiment are written on board. Once again, I felt the level of learning at university differs from high school. I will apply to the Department of food science and biotechnology in Dongguk University.” Another participant, Lee Ja-young from Chungshin girl’s high school said, “I am interested in biotechnology. Thorough the Biotechnology and Life Science Academy, I could do experiments practically. It was also good to test what I learned theoretically. Moreover, I got to know something unfamiliar such as fluorescent proteins.”
The Biotechnology and Life Science Academy is expected to be helpful for students to develop interest about more advanced science and to help them decide their major when they enter university. Following this session during the summer vacation, another Academy is scheduled to be also held in the winter vacation. Profits from the program will be used for student scholarships.
