Culture Diversification in Korean Society
By Kim Hyun-sung (Newsweek Prize)
Last semester, I applied for the LG Global Challenger, which is a Program for the undergraduate school students in Korea to give an opportunity to explore the world. LG selects some teams whose plans to explore the world with showing the Korean problems we face compared with other countries are good. I also applied for it with a plan to show the Korean cultural problems, especially in Literature. Even though I missed the chance, I found that there are many cultural problems in Korea.
Among them, the most serious one is that many Korean people dont love their traditional culture. Although they always say that traditional xulture is important, actually they dont try to keep the culture goes on. For example, most of the Korean peole dont know where Jung-chul, a famous poet in Korea, lived. Actually even the grave of Jung-chul has not preserved well.
But how about Ireland? Irish people established James Joyce Day as a big Festival week. James Joyce was famous for his novels like Dubliners and Nobel Prize in Literature in the world. The Irish made the James Joyce Day famouse not only in Ireland but also in the world. Their effort to preserve his life and to diversify his literature as a festival succeeded to make people love their culture more and spread their culture value in the world.
And next problem that I want to state is the invisible hierarchy in Korean culture. It means that some hig class people enjoy their own and the high quality if cultural things like art galleries or classic concerts. On the other hand, most people adjacent to just popular clture like popular music or literature. It means we lack of the efforts to vary or diversify the culture things fairly for all the people. As I stated above, like Irelnd, we need efforts to enjoy the cultural things fair for all people with diversifying them.
Culture is a big power in the modern society because we live in the Internet period. It means that the world became one and, as you know, in the internet space we can easily get in touch with countless cultural things in the world. We, all individuals can be messengers to spread our culture into the world. Based on the love of our traditional culture and preservation, we can interchange our culture with other ccountries and the diversified culture in Korea would be outstanding.
