The office of General Education of Dongguk University and the University Writing Center moved to the Information & Culture Center from September 21st to 24th. The main reason for the move to a new location was to locate the office of General Education and other facilities and services of Dongguk University in one place as much as possible. There are 24 professors and their labs at Information & Culture Center, and over 90% of classrooms are used by the office of General Education classes. Also, as most of the professors who were in the Information & Culture Center moved to New Engineering Building. Information & Culture Center is now mostly used as office of General Education. The Writing Center also moved to Information & Culture Center. The Writing Center is pleased about the move, based on the reason that more students can easily come to the Writing Center. Because of the easier accessibility to the Writing Center, student use of the Center is expected to increase. The floating population in front of Student Hall, where Information & Culture Center is located next to it, is greater than that of 1st floor at Administrative Building. Moreover, the previous location of the Writing Center was located inside the 1st floor of the Administrative Building, so the accessibility was really low. The Writing Center’s management analysis at 1st semester of 2012 results showed that compared to the same period last year, visitors have increased to 390%.
Visitors of the same period last year was 156, while visitors of this year’s 1st semester increased to 607. The Tutor system which is connected to ‘Writing and Presentation’ class had 452 students, personalized counseling classified major and level had 143students, and 12 students had E-mail counseling. There is one Full-time researcher and two research assistants who are responsible for writing counseling and writing coaching. The Writing Center has also started a new program, Writing Academy, since October15th. Previous programs, such as Writing clinic and personalized counseling, are still being offered. The program that started since mid October contains 4 week courses and 6 week courses. This new program is for those who have difficulties with writing, and those who are nervous about the 1 on 1 tutoring system. This program is based on normal lecture style, while teaching basic grammar and writing skills. They also teach specific writing techniques including resume, self introduction, cover letter and etc.
