What is the Chungmu-ro Culture Valley? First, the Chungmu-ro Culture Valley is connected to the Number 3 subway-line. There are several areas in various districts of Seoul and outlying cities that are connected by the number 3 line. These areas include Chungmu-ro, Sangam, Goyang, Ilsan and Paju. The main features of the Chungmu-ro Culture Valley are Dongguk University campuses in Chungmu-ro and Ilsan, DMC (Digital Media City) in Sangam, the World of Korean Wave Center in Goyang and the Book City in Paju. Together with these cities, Dongguk and the government are trying to make a Valley of CT (Culture Technology) and IT (Information Technology).
Actually, the ‘Chungmu-ro Culture Valley’concept was intiated by Dongguk University Industry Cooperation in 2009. This concept became more detailed and important in 2012 by starting a business called LINC (Leaders in INdustry university Cooperation).
University-Industry Cooperation is in almost every university. This was made to help provide government support to industrial and academic research at universities. Hence the University Industry Cooperation is doing a lot of research and business with major companies and the government.
There are HUNIC (Hub UNiversity Industry Cooperation) and LINC businesses. LINC has become a new priority for University-Industry Cooperation. Before LINC, the HUNIC program was the focus for University-Industry Cooperation. The HUNIC program was run from 2009 to 2012 and this was upgraded to LINC starting from this year.
This year, 51 universities were selected by government to become part of the LINC project. The Government has provided the University Industry Cooperation with support in the amount of 170 billion won. The project is connecting‘A’ region universities, to the city government and to corporations through mutual cooperation. The universities’can help students develop their talents and develop new technologies through research. The district can grow and create more jobs. Finally, companies can employ more workers and make innovations in techniques. The reason why this project started was to make this country better. Today, there are so many students who prefer major companies for their future careers. This could be mean that students do not apply to small companies or consider other jobs. Hence youth unemployment keeps increasing. In addition, the preference for major companies helps major companies to grow more by getting talented graduates. Then students prefer the companies more and more. To prevent this undesirable cycle, the government has tried to increase the competitiveness of small companies. The way to increase competitiveness is by getting technology. If the companies do not have ability to develop it themselves, they have to hire talented workers who have the skills to develop technology. Therefore, the first step of the solution was to develop the skills of students. In other words, LINC was started to solve small companies’problem, to bring revitalization to regional economies and raise the employment rate.
Chungmu-ro Culture Valley will be realized by Dongguk University’s business, blending art, engineering and management. Later on, the arts component of the project will be realized by promoting skilled arts and performing arts around Chungmu-ro, and practical skills for making movies. Engineering will focus on 3D or network technology and developing apps or games. The management aspect will develop by upgraded marketing and distribution.
When the program is adapted to Dongguk University, there will be education in relation with corporate studies to cultivate human resources aiming at meeting the social demand. The education will be combination of IT and CT. For example, there are computer graphics, game engines, network presswork, information security, establishing game servers and so on. The students who are going to get educated are students who are majoring technology. Last year, LG Electronics Company asked students to fulfill some projects that are going on in the company. Then the company evaluated students’ work graded students and it helped students to be hired. One of authorities in LINC said “Until now, Dongguk University was better known for Buddhism, the Department of Theatre and the Department of Police Administration, not the Engineering College. Also students did not learn what they were studying well and had no chances to use their technological skills in practical ways. However, from now on, Dongguk’s status will be upgraded by LINC. Students will become talented and be needed human resources.”
Before starting the LINC program, Dongguk made efforts to blend the strong humanities, liberal arts and arts programs with IT. Today, Dongguk is trying to grow more and make‘Chungmu-ro Culture Valley’by combining the CT, Dongguk and LINC. If this vision is realized, it will mean that Dongguk has made cities that are surrounding subway number 3 line. Also, it will not only help small companies raise their competitiveness but also create closer ties between Dongguk and industry. Ultimately, this will help all Dongguk University students have better career prospects. Therefore, government will support more and Dongguk will become illustrious.
