Dongguk International Seon Center (ISC) held a Ganhwa Seon Concentrated Fulfillment Program during the summer vacation. The Concentrated Fulfillment Program started from August 8th and continued until August 15th. About 130 people participated in the program and the program was opened for everyone who wanted to participate. In addition, participate was accepted in order of application and applicants had to pay a small cost to attend. However, it seemed like there was nobody who thought they were wasting time and money.
Ganwha Seon is one of Buddhism’s Seon fulfillment ways and it is sitting in Zen (Seon) meditation with subject. As part of the Ganhwa Seon Concentrated Fulfillment Program, ISC structured the day to start with having time, for an hour, of Writing and Asking Buddhism with a monk, Soo-bul. After that, participants had time to do meditation. In fact, the days were planned for participants. From the 1st to 3rd day, ISC gave participants time of Writing and Asking Buddhism, starting from 9 A.M. From the 4th to 7th day, is also same with before days. However, from 4th day, participants had time to listen to other Buddhism teachings, and to get individual counseling. The Post participated for some of the program, and the atmosphere of the participants was very solemn.
ISC usually holds a Buddhist Ceremony every Saturday. These ceremonies are held not only during the semester, but also during summer vacation. During the vacation, the ceremony was not held for two days, one for rest and one for the concentrated Fulfillment program. This shows that ISC really works hard for the promotion of Dongguk and Buddhism. Though ISC is working hard, students’ participation is very low. ISC said that in the SaturdayBuddhist Ceremony, only 10% of attendees are students. If we are Dongguk students, it would be part of our university identity to participate, and there would be far fewer opportunities to join after graduation. For the upcoming semester the ISC is anticipating more students to participate and experience the benefits of meditation. In addition, there are plans to hold another two Ganhwa Seon Concentrated Fulfillment Programs again during the winter vacation, from January 1st to 10th and from January 30th to February 5th.
