What is it like to be a journalist

On May 15th, one of our school’s most prestigious graduates Hwang Heon, who is currently working as an announcer for MBC, came to our school to talk with young Donggukians. The speech took about an hour and was held in the Main Hall. It mainly dealt with providing helpful advice for job seekers. He talked about his job and students were able to get sense of what is it is like to be a broadcaster and the responsibilities that come with the position.

Do your best to be the best.
During his presentation, he talked about his student life at Dongguk University. As a student, he wanted to be an extraordinary foreign language speaker. Therefore, he tried to make as many foreign friends as he could. He would then use them to improve his English ability. By doing this, he gained confidence and began to feel prouder and prouder of himself, which boosted him to where he is today. “Environmental factors do not matter when it comes to succeeding; if you have passion within yourself and put a lot of effort in realizing your dreams, you can be the person that you want to be.”

Read classics
He said one of the biggest factors that made him who he was today was reading classic books.  These books gave him a solid base of knowledge in which he could use later in his career. He then chose to bring the students into the conversation and enthusiastically asked them if they had read the novel ‘Tess’. His eyes lit up, as he awaited a reply.  None came. The students stared at him in silence, with empty gazes. He took a long disparaged pause and then spoke. “There are two kinds of people; people who read books and those who don’t. The latter group should be envious of the book readers because they are missing something so great that only the classic authors could give them.”

Finally, he concluded his speech. He said there was nothing that people couldn’t achieve. He mentioned how his own big breakthrough had come while covering the Iranian earthquake so long ago and how desperate that situation was.  Even that, he said could be turned into a golden opportunity. “Nothing is impossible when you eliminate prejudice and take the bull by the horns.”
