There was the lecture of Park Kyeong-cheol, so called the country doctor, on April 26th at 6:30 P.M. at the Deok-am seminar room of Culture Center. The theme of the lecture was “What is ‘Justice of modern society’?”.
The lecture was primarily for graduate students, but the seminar room was full of many people including Dongguk University students, ordinary people and students of other universities as well as graduate students. The seminar room in a mess was tidy when Park entered the seminar room with enthusiastic applause.
The country doctor is a known pseudonym. And Park is a respected person together with An Cheol-su by many young men. Although he is a surgeon, he has studied economics with great interest in college. So he also works as an economic critic and hosts the programs of economics on TV and radio and combine writing and lecture.
To give up greed is to be happy.
In the lecture, Park said, “People have tried to be happy by achieving what they wanted since 1700s. However, people can’t be happy by getting many things because there is no limit to people's desire. Therefore people have to give up greed to be happy.”
Causing social problems by relative desires.
Park particularly explained desire in detail. “People have two desires. One is absolute desire which people have naturally. The other is relative desire. It is learned to people by technology, brand, culture, and so on. Absolute deficiency’s age has finished in 1900s. Then, since relative deficiency’s age has started, endless relative desire causes many problems in modern society. Without desires about overproduction and over-consumption, problems such as polarization of wealth, global warming, environmental pollution and resource depletion have never happened.”
Age that ‘Together’ is important.
“People should reflect on oneself and realize that the relative desire will end soon and that new age will be dawned. And people need to know that living together is important in modern society. Today’s true justice is that we all go together hand in hand based on trust.”
The lecture of Park suggests many things to students who are busy in building up career. We are living in an age when paradigms have changed at the moment.
Therefore, students of Dongguk University have to gain an insight into new paradigm. Then, pursue values and rationality accordingly. So the students are in control of new age.
