G20 Business Summit CEO Lecture at Dongguk

One CEO who participated in the G20 Business Summit gave a lecture here about 'Leadership in International Finance Services' in Hak-Myung seminar room. The lecturer was William J. Toppeta. Toppeta graduated from New York law school and upon joining the 'Metlife' insurance company in the U.S, became CEO of the Canadian branch.  He also became the Senior Vice President of the individual business sector and performed his duties as CEO of the Customer service sector until 2001. He is now a leader of the internationalization business sector in MetLife. Nowadays, he pays careful attention to not only the world economy but also the social responsibility of enterprise.

At Dongguk he lectured about the world economy stream, how the economic crisis could be resolved and offered up great advice to young people.  From his lecture, Donggukians had the chance to learn know-how experience from one of the world's economic leaders.
First, he explained the value of having a dream.  He said, we should “Have a big dream and not waver in your endeavors until you realize that dream. If young people have a dream which they want to achieve, then they’ll fight to realize that dream and they’ll work hard to their best in all works and fields".
Then, he emphasized 'using time efficiently' "I hate when people waste their precious time. You have a lot of time but you have to use that time economically. If you use your time for professional self-development, then you can be at the top of your field” said William.
Next, he explained the meaning of holding the G20 in Korea and what the benefits are. "It is a very proud thing when the G20 Summit is held in your own country and by holding this summit, it can bring an enormous economic boost of about 21 trillion as well as having a marketing effect” said William.
During the questions period, he was asked about ‘Korean CEOs’ “Good Korean CEOs have vision and are very important in the Global era. Also Koreans have the possibility and belief that they can lead the World economy.  But I think Korean CEOs have a disadvantage because they are often tardy in reacting to changing trends” said William.

Yu U-jin who majors in International Trade and participated in the lecture said “It was a very useful lecture which was given by a famous world CEO.  Especially, how he talked about the world economy was quite impressive.”
