The 1st conference hosted by Dongguk University Academy of Buddhist studies, was held as a name of “Ganhwa Seon, illuminating the world” at the middle auditorium last August, with Buddhist experts from Japan and the West, monks and writers in attendance.
“Ganhwa Seon” is a method of meditative tradition aimed at contemplating one's original nature through the meditating of “hwadu,” or key phrases given to practitioners to help them achieve that kind of goal.
If someone speculating his original nature, then that person is considered enlightened. It is known as one of the most developed meditation methods and spread widely in the Buddhist world and has been the main method carried out by the Jogye Order, the largest Buddhist sect in Korea and continues to in contemporary Korea.
Compared to existing academic conferences, the conference has its special features in that weighting equal balance both scholars and practitioners, satisfying the public great practical benefits as well as scholars’ cross-culture perspectives.
