Are you still crying over the fact that you don’t have enough time and money to study English? If so, you are behind the times! As I-phones and other smart-phones have appeared, lots of digital contents have been developed that can help. Among the large number of these apps, Podcasts are by far the most beloved all around the world for their convenience and enormous listings of materials.
The term 'Podcast' was coined in 2004 by combining with the term 'pod' which is named after the i-pod (a popular mp3 player made by Apple) and 'cast' which means broadcasting. In other words, Podcasts are digital audio files available for download in the internet. If you register for particular Podcasts that you want to listen to, new updating files of Podcasts which you have already registered are automatically downloaded into your device. So, you don't have to spend time downloading them all over again. You can just enjoy them whenever and wherever you want.
"Thanks to the Podcasting service, I can listen to the English broadcasting such as Good Morning Pops or EBS whenever I want without any processing," Ha-na, Chae, the student of Dongguk University (DU) said. "Before I took advantage of this service, I had to listen to the broadcasts at specific times. I also had to go on the internet and download them if I missed them. This took a lot of time and my English studying was falling behind, but now I listen in my spare time by using the Podcast service." You do not have to have an I-pod to listen to a Podcast. Most of the Podcasts are MP3 files so you can download and listen to them on any kind of MP3 player.
One of the most well-known and popular Podcasts for learning English is the News Pod released everyday by BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/newspod). It is a Daily web program that highlights BBC Radio News stories. Alison Baker, a professor in the English department of DU, also recommends other foreign broadcasting's Podcast as a way of developing students’ English skills such as CBC and CNN. She uses the CBC's Podcast (http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting) for her own lectures and students’ reactions have been favorable. The ‘How stuff works' podcast (www.howstuffworks.com) may not be popular but has lots of useful and intriguing materials that can entertain listeners. The sections of the 'stuff you should know' and the 'coolest stuff on the planet' are highly recommended.

The materials of Podcasts are not limited to learning English. There are lots of contents about languages, history, books, movies, music, and life. "I started studying Chinese and Japanese by using podcasts." Hyun-woo, Sun, a power blogger of learning English, said. "After studying two languages for about fifteen months from Podcasts, I can now communicate effectively with Chinese and Japanese people. I steadily studied using this method and it really works!" He also noted another advantage of Podcasts. The downloader can post questions on message boards about the contents and get answers directly from the Podcaster. "I own two Podcast sites (www.alktomeinkorea.com, www.languagecast.net) which introduce Korean culture and Korean language to foreigners. They listen to my broadcasts and ask lots of questions. Podcasters and downloaders can continually interact each other. I think this is really helpful both to study and learning new things."
These days, getting information from podcasts is popular but so is the utilization of social marketing which is becoming more invigorating than ever. Hyundai Capital made Ji-Young's (young pianist) performance into a Podcast and offered it to gather peoples’ interest before by broadcasting the special outdoor park concert he performed together with one of Europe’s finest orchestras, BBC Symphony Orchestra. "It is a way of marketing to introduce the performance of Ji-Young." So-jung Lee, the member of Hyundai Capital's marketing team said. "By presenting the Podcast, the performance was naturally promoted. We can see the interest level of people rising. Meeting peoples’ demands and the trends today, we will provide more performances via Podcasts."
