With a student body of approximately 25,000 students there is no lack of opportunity for students to meet like-minded peers as well as nurture relationships which will last long after graduation. With over 1,000 faculty members DU strives to promote development of self, provide diverse cultural experiences, and teach students of varying backgrounds, opinions, beliefs, and values. The foundational spirit of DU is summed up in three educational goals: to build up one's character based on the Buddhist virtues; to make the nation, mankind, and nature full of wisdom and benevolence; and to realize the ideal society in which people can trust and respect each other.
One of the few Buddhist affiliated universities in the country DU has always desired to spread its message of the Buddhist Spirit, Korean values and culture not only throughout Korea but also internationally. By opening up a campus in Los Angeles, California, DU has opened the doors for its students to experience life outside Korea, as well as expose others to a side of Korean culture they may not have seen before. There are also opportunities for students to study abroad by participating in the student exchange program. Countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan, Russia, Canada, and America are some of those available for participants.
With an increasing desire to promote and prepare students for life outside Korea, over 10% of classes are taught in English. With enrollment steadily increasing, the Center for Foreign Language Education has also continued to grow. By increasing the number of foreign faculty classes are kept to a minimal size, which ensures that students are given as much individualized attention as possible.
In an effort to provide students with a variety of English-based subjects to choose from, classes are constantly changing, being updated and added to the universities class of courses. The majority of these courses are of course language based, such as Conversation 1 and 2, Public Speech, Academic Writing, Integrated Writing and Debate on English Speaking Cultures. However, there are also specialty courses which are based on other subjects such as Film, Science, and Research among others. The list of these courses is continually being updated as new professors are brought in to develop and organize new courses.
Since its beginning Dongguk University has always tried to provide the best environment for students to reach their goals and achieve success. In a collective effort between faculty and students the process by which the next generation learns and is enabled continues to change for the better. By looking to rise above and beyond those that came before them, students can take advantage of the opportunities DU has to offer and prepare them for a lifelong journey of self-discovery, service to others, and spiritual enlightenment.
