Corecessglobal is an IT enterprise in San Jose, California. It handles ADSL/VDSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line/ Very high-data rate Digital Subscriber Line) and GE-PON (Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network) equipments as network equipment company. The Post interviewed Kim Woo-jung, a student majoring in Information and Communication Engineering, and currently an intern at Corecessglobal. Let's listen to him.
What are the advantages?
I was selected for WEST (Work+English+Study+Travel) program, and went to the USA. WEST is the program linking language training with internship to promote global leaders, supported by the government. I could improve not only my ability in English, but also the sense for working abroad. I also get paid for the internship, so I can supplement living expenses by myself.
I work in Technical Support Department, and usually support clients in the USA and Latin America technically. Also, I participate in IT conferences which are sometimes held in the USA. Most of all, what is satisfying is that I can gain valuable experiences related to my field. Silicon Valley is widely known as California's high-tech area, and my major is Information and Communication Engineering. Therefore by handling equipments in Corecessglobal, I could practice what I had learned theoretically in university. Furthermore, most people here in Silicon Valley work in IT field, and there are a lot of things I can learn from them. On my way to work place I see many companies like Cisco, Apple, HP, Intel, and I resolved to learn more to enter those companies.
What are the disadvantages?
Because there are many Korean employees, I don't have many opportunities to experience American employees' culture and acquire characteristic of foreign corporations. However, because many of my coworkers are Korean I can understand my job quickly when I am trained.
Money does matter
The reason why I decided to apply for WEST was that I can earn money to meet my living expenses. I received aid from the government (about 50% of my expenses) and took out a student loan for the rest. To explain the student loan, the government offers an interest-free loan for 5 years, and the student should pay off the loan within 10 years after beginning his job. They can delay paying off the loan until they are employed. In my case, cost of language study and airfare was covered by the aid from government and student loan. What I paid for was just living expenses during four months of studying English. Now there is no cost because I work as an intern. It will be helpful to refer to the fact that Dongguk aids its enrolled students by giving them 2,000,000 won.
Tips & Advice
If you want to be hired as an intern, you have to think what you really want to be. Therefore, you should set your goal first before applying to work as intern to experience the works related with your dream. Moreover, you had better expand your capability of that field in Korea before you leave for the internship abroad. I experienced part-time jobs and got a license about my major, so it was easy to find an internship abroad.
Furthermore, you have to understand that interns are unpaid whether they are foreign or not. Although Corecessglobal is a small company, I think that it is better for me to work here because I can learn sufficiently.
In addition, you must bring your IDP (International Driving Permit). You need a car to commute because public transportation is not common in some big cities. If you can drive you expand possibilities of working at any company, because transportation is not a problem.
