Power-blogging, a way for university students to broaden their experiences

Have you ever gotten headaches trying to resolve the following? 'I am interested in the world of advertising and want to embark on a journey of discovery.  But I am also worried about making myself suitable for employment.  How can I enhance my employment skills and do what I desire at the same time?'

If so, why don't you start managing a blog, and turn yourself into a Power-blogger?  "After becoming a Power-blogger, I was able to improve myself," said Park Eun-jin, a student at Korea University, who manages a famous blog that concerns itself with food, fashion and culture.  She is just one example of a large influx of bloggers trying to improve their skills while learning more about their favorite products.

'Blog' is a contraction of the term 'Weblog', i.e. a web page that keeps individual records such as diaries, pictures, music, and movies. A 'Power-blogger' is recognized as the most popular blog-owning person of this kind.  Their blogs are always frequented by visitors in search of numerous useful materials.
Power blogger's comments play an important part in persuading prospective consumers about new products.  If the power-blogger endorses a cosmetic, visitors will then think seriously about procuring it.  The blogger makes direct-to-consumer advertising possible. That is why many corporations are now recruiting power-bloggers to publicize their brand-new products or services.  Kim Kyung-yeon, a staff member of the Public Relations Team at Kumho E&C (Engineering and Construction), said: "through using the innovative power-blog, we expect to improve the public image of our company in the eyes of the younger generation."

Because netizens consider the power-blogger as a family member or friend, what is written or commented on has a huge influence. If, for example, the blogger comments on specific products, this will make an immediate impression on the netizens.  Furthermore, because the power-bloggers are university students, they are able to reflect the younger generation's individual needs.  This is why advertising that uses power-blogging is regarded as innovative.

Choi Young-gyoun, a professor of Advertising and Public Relations Department said: "it seems that the netizens rush to buy a product soon after the power-bloggers update information about it.  To explain, netizens have become the core targets for specific products and corporations.   That is why corporations are always looking out for affective power-bloggers".

In the era of the 'Power-blogger', anyone passionate enough can become one.

It is useful for university students to try their hand at power-blogging as it will gain them experience and employment opportunities. Power blogger Park Eun Jin said: "If you are a power-blogger, you can experience all kinds of different work.  Working as a power-blogger for Kumho E&C, has given me a far better understanding of construction.  I have also learned about securities through my work as a spokesperson of Tong Yang Securities Inc..  When it comes to the human network worrying you the most can be attained, according to the extent of your effort.  In most power-blogger offline meetings I meet people of all ages and from all walks of life (including staff from various corporations) and maintain close relations with all of them.

"I think the most difficult point for bloggers is the moment when they decide to have their own blogs, because this is when they have to write stories that will entice visitors. When I started, I had very few visitors; it was like having a conversation with myself.  Nevertheless, I maintained my blog with great patience and eventually the visitors to the site increased."

There are, however, some pitfalls for maintaining blogs, especially, if you are a university student with a heavy work load.    "University students have to attend lectures and study hard in order to get the necessary certifications.  It was particularly hard for me to keep blogging during examinations.  In addition, I felt the gap between the virtual world and the real world," Park said.  She emphasized that keeping a balance between the virtual and real world is vital.

In all events, power-bloggers can chase their dreams in interesting ways and, concomitantly, raise their self-esteem by becoming leaders in their respective fields.  Park added: "If you make good use of the blog, you will accrue many benefits from it; for example, the chance to communicate with other people or learning more about your favorite products.  If you want to be a power-blogger, try and write your own true story day by day; don't be impatient.  Above all, you should provide specific field information that is different from other bloggers'.  Go for it!"
