Can Dongguk be trusted with providing a good student information system?

Where does Dongguk rank in the Korean university league table?
If you are a DU student, you might have searched for this information on Naver. Usually, the search engine puts DU in 9th place. In a country full of universities, 10th place is quite an achievement. How have we achieved this? It may suggest that the name of our university is widely known. Such a high rating could also suggest that our cyber sytems? UDRIMS and E-class - are state-of-the-art facilities easily accessible to students and faculty alike.

These cyber systems are used by many people. However, are they really managed effectively? There are three representative cyber systems at DU: DU's web-site, E-class and UDRIMS. These web-sites are the first port of call for many people; therefore, for some, they represent the initial image of Dongguk. In short, it is not only DU students but outsiders also who get their information from the Dongguk web-sites. Thus, the school homepage has to satisfy all users’ requirements. Taking all of these into consideration, DU's web-sites are convenient information source for all kinds of users. Take the home-page as an instance. Instead of using too many pop-ups, the website has an ad section in the left lower corner of the page, a quick menu placed on the right and a notice section in the center of the page. Another cyber system is UDRIMS. UDRIMS stands for Ubiquitous Dongguk's Renovated Information Management System. It is a big improvement compared with the old system which only offered a university application  as well as a homepage with several student support services. Now DU students can use UDRIMS in various ways. For example, registering for classes, applying for scholarships, managing grades and, lastly, renting out school facilities. Moreover, the information jam caused by too many accesses by students  is now an old story. Also, by making easier access to UDRIMS, the whole internet system for students’ service is getting improved.

 Let us now take a look at E-class. To maximize the efficiency of off-line classes, the new system enables a quick exchange of opinions between professors and students, and also between students. Now students can attend cyber lectures anytime, anywhere by using E-class.

Everything has its strong points and weak ones. So with which points are our university students and professors most dissatisfied? Most of them pointed out the followings: not enough day-to-day maintenance of the system, no file upload system, numerous active x problems etc. When it comes to the capacity limit, an official from the Information Management team said that they removed it because of users’ complaints. The capacity limit has been rendered obsolete, while the large capacity files were only kept for one semester. The official also responded to the redundant UDRIMS check problem. "Although we informed students that we would check the system three times a day, this actually would happen infrequently. To tell the truth, we check UDRIMS system only once a day from 8p.m. to 9p.m. UDRIMS is still far from perfect. But when we find problems, we try to fix them quickly.
Through UDRIMS, E-class and School Homepage, DU has shown that it is an avant-garde in cyber systems.

However, DU still has some weak points: for instance, the active x problem. In E-class, when users write something, they have to install numerous active x. This installation process is very complicated, and takes a long time. Moreover, when active x is not installed perfectly, the page cannot be opened. To solve this problem, DU should invest more time in improving the program. Perhaps then it will accomplish its vision: “ The university which takes the lead in customer satisfaction".
