On April 29, a press interview was held by the General Student Council. Students who participated in this interview complained about many things to the Dongguk University (DU) administration. One of them was the change of the school register. Such a change looks natural to admin in order to do improve services. So, why did students complain about such a thing?
They said that the DU administration changed the school register without consulting the student body first. A student said: “I don’t understand the administration’s attitude. The students are the most important element in the school, not DU administration. However, the administration never seems to consult our opinions in the decision making process.” Moreover, the important thing is that DU students are not satisfied with the consequences arising from the school register change. A student majoring in Information and Communication said: “Communication with our seniors is getting harder. This is because the decisions made by seniors for the juniors are fundamentally unpopular.” A student majoring in Advertising said that the school register change doesn’t help students. “The school has altered the position of my department many times (In fact, the Advertising department has, in turn, belonged to the Business, Social Science and Media College). Consequently students majoring in advertising feel as if they don’t belong to any college now.” Another student majoring in International Trade said that: “When I go to the college office, the administrations are often confused about which school I belong to: Business, Social Sciences or the Economics Department. I don’t understand this. I think that DU administration must solve this problem.”
A member of Academic Affairs answered all these complaints by saying: “There are many students in the school. So it is very hard for the school to make everyone happy.” He also added that: “We don’t make important decisions such as the change of the school register by ourselves. First, we have many meetings. Based on formal procedure, it is only then that we make a decision.” He also wished to stress the strong points of their decisions in the past. He said that, in the example of the English and Information Systems department, the students were now able to follow an easier curriculum than before.
The change of the school register is necessary to improve the quality of DU’s education service. Many students already recognize this fact. However, students insist that there should be more consultation on the decision making process. To minimize student complaints, the school must listen to opinion. If, however, DU administration keeps making decisions without consultation, the complaints will keep on going.
At the last press interview, the General Student Council suggested to compose the decision - making committee out of school administration and DU students. Of course, making a new decision committee is a really hard thing to do. However, making decisions together leads to the minimization of complaints. And it cannot be denied this could be better for DU in the long run.
