The Choong-mu Art Hall was crowded with people who came to watch the musical “The Three Musketeers” This musical was popular with many people recently. The Post met the main actor whose name is Yu Jun-sang. He is our senior. He attended the Theatre and Film Department of Dongguk University (DU). As soon as he saw the Post reporters, he joyfully welcomed reporters. The Post started interviewing this serious but witty man.
The Post : What made you start Musical theatre acting?
Yu : I liked singing and playing, so I was interested in musicals from boyhood. I wanted to do the kind of work that I liked. Then, I realized that the musical is the most proper work for me. At that time the musical wasn't booming. But, I had a vague idea that the musical will develop. And then I entered the Theatre and Film Department of DU. I only attended class about play and training. In 1997, I was cast in the Danny role for the musical Grease.
The Post : Why did you choose the musical “The Three Musketeers”?
Yu : Whenever I select a movie, drama and musical, I spend a lot of time considering the message of the story. The musical “The Three Musketeers” is a creative work based on an original foreign musical. This story stresses the importance of friendship, love, betrayal, and especially justice among three musketeers. While this story may look not serious, the audience seems to identify with its themes. The result of the pre-trial of the show is very good. At the same time, selecting this musical seems to be a smart decision.
The Post : Why did you take the role Athos? And please tell us about Athos.
Yu : This musical has a lot of emotion. I want to show my different aspect. Also, many people said I was good for this role. Athos is a remarkable swordsman. But he couldn’t protect the woman he loved. Moreover, he had to give up his love because of the King. But, finally he again searched for his love woman.
The Post : Have you ever had difficulties in action scenes or in anything else on stage?
Yu : I spend so much time practicing, because I tried to be a Athos and to freely flourish a sword. The more I stand on stage, the more I feel so tired.
The Post : Many members of the casts often yell the lines "”We are the One!”" Have you ever thought about this musical lesson?
Yu : I think more of justice between men and the emotion of love in common days. In the last scene, I said “Come on, my friend!” At that time, my eyes swam with tears involuntarily.
The Post : Will you select best scene or the most beautiful music from the musical?
Yu : The best scene is fighting with swords, carriage running fight and Athos solo scene with Milady in the shadowy background. The wonderful music is Romance of Paris, Opera, You are my knight, Promise and I was abandoned.
The Post : How do you want to be remembered as a actor in field of Musical?
Yu : I want to have a resonant voice in this stage until 70years old. I always feel worthwhile and passionate. But, when I feel despondent, then I make an effort to overcome this hardship. And I repeat the same pattern of emotions like this. I will be an actor who overcomes the fear.
The Post : Are there any professors you remember or any unforgettable memory of school life?
Yu : There are so many honorable professors. I was taught valuable guidance by them. So, I was very happy when I attended school. When I was student, I was trained by running around the campus. Especially, Namsan was the best place for running. And I ate Ramen in Dongguk Hall. I like school very much.
The Post : Do you have any advice for Dongguk University's students who want to become a musical performer?
Yu : Don’t be lazy with training. It isn’t easy preparing for this job. It needs investing long time and effort. It is important not to forget your dream. Life is the course of conquering. Now, Yu Jun Sang is impassioned in musical the Three Musketeers. Furthermore, The movie “Where is Ronny...” will be released in June 4th. This movie received favorable comment in Jeonju international film festival. It is his interior strong will that makes possible for him to act so perfectly in movie, drama and musicals. Donggukians should remember the advice of Yu Jun sang. And let’s run for dream!
