This play was first performed in 1999 and has been previously performed at, among others, COEX Art Hall, Gimhae Arts and Sports Center, and Seoul Arts Center. A notable performance was made at the Russian Takangka Theater. This company received a standing ovation amidst loud acclamations of "Mama!"
"Son Suk's Mother" the plot
The mother, Son Suk (for she is the heroine of this play) wants to learn how to read and write but has stopped doing this by parents' opposition. She also has not been allowed to marry her lover. So she marries another man, favored by her parents, but not by her. Her mother-in-law is a gisaeng, a kind of hostess with bad qualities. She suffers harsh treatment from this woman. To make matters worse, her husband is a playboy, while tragically her dearly loved son dies of malaria in the Korean War.
Son Suk is illiterate. However, her granddaughter helps her to overcome this handicap by teaching her how to read and write. At the end of the play, she dies, but just before this she writes her name "Hwang Il-soon" on window.
These days, values and morals are under decline and family solidarity is disappearing. If you see this play, you can remind yourself of the importance of motherhood and family values. For these reasons, "Son Suk's Mother" can be the best present for your lovely parents and family.
