Introduction

Stony Brook is one of the four university centers in the State University of New York system, and has an enrollment of more than 22,000 students. Stony Brook was one of ten national universities awarded a National Science Foundation recognition award in 1998 for their integration of research and education. In 2008, Stony Brook was ranked as the 127th best university in the world, placing it in the top 1%--out of more than 8,300--by the London-based Times Higher Education Supplement.

The Post interviewed Lee Ji-eun, a student majoring in English language, interpretation and translation and currently an exchange student at SUNY. She will tell us more about SUNY. Let's listen to her.

What are the advantages?

It takes about one and a half hours to Manhattan by train - from the campus to the center. As you all know, Manhattan is the place where you can enjoy many cultural activities. Having said this, there are many interesting things to do on-campus - parties, seminars, cultural exchange programs and so on. The student facilities are also well organized. The main library is fully equipped with plenty of books, dvds and videos; you can save money by borrowing these materials. And you don? have to worry about public safety since Long Island, the place where the campus is located, is a safe area. The thing I like the most about the school is that the classes are active. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions, but no one judges you on what you say. You will get good grades if you are willing to participate in class.

Are there any disadvantages?

There are many Korean students here. Some students tend to hang-out with their fellow Koreans and only speak Korean. This can be a problem. New York is called a "Melting pot." There are various races including a lot of Asian students in school. For this reason, racial discrimination is hard to come across. However it is sometimes hard to be friends with American students. You should try and approach them first. Try to attend school events and clubs as much as possible so to meet and talk with American students.

Money does matter!

The total expense is 23,170 USD per year. The dormitory is on campus; it? convenient and well-equipped but expensive. If you want to save money, you can rent-out an apartment or a house or find a roommate on the school? web site. The most difficult thing is that the living expenses and taxes are extremely high. If you want, though, you can get a part time job on campus.

Tips & Advice

The exchange student program is for students who want to take high level courses in another language and study alongside other competitive students. Its aim is not just improve English skills, though. Therefore, you should be ready to take classes that are in English but cover a whole range of subjects. But you shouldn? worry too much about this: you?l be ready for these classes if you have a good TOEFL score. One more thing: if you have trouble writing essays, you can get help from the writing center in school.
