The public enjoyed the Centennial as well. Why do they have an interest in Dongguk? It may be related with DU's long history and contribution to society and with its famous alumni. However, only the number of one hundred is impossible for the public to grasp the nature of Dongguk. Given the past of Dongguk, the spirit of overcoming many struggles during 100 years has contributed to the freedom and independence of Korea. Students sometimes couldn't take classes because of the harsh policies of Japan's colonial rule of Korea. The campus was destroyed during the Korean War, too. But Dongguk got over the difficulties and its spirit never faltered.
In spite of this proud history, there is a dark side. The School Authority annually raised the registration fee without student agreement. The General Students Council demonstrated in front of Main Hall and Buddha Statue in order to block it. This is a vicious circle.
Moreover last February, the Board of Directors decided to dismiss one professor for political reasons. Some students and professors said that the school decision was an attack on academic freedom.
The Dongguk Post also celebrates its 40th Anniversary on June 1. For 40 years, the Post reporters have tried to publish truthful and useful news and cover campus events. To do this, reporters sacrificed their personal and academic lives.
But the Post has been criticized as well as Dongguk. According to its own survey, the Post is not read by many students, who criticized the magazine for not giving more useful and lively news. Sometimes they say they can't ever find where to get it. Thus, the Post needs to work harder to satisfy the readers' eclectic taste.
Both Dongguk University and The Dogguk Post have faced hardship. It's not only a time to celebrate our past but also a time to reflect it. We both face a turning point. We must be the best university and magazine. To meet our hope, we must never be satisfied.
