The introduction of the five-day workweek has touched off a nationwide leisure-time boom. The extra free day means less work and more play. The Dongguk Post interviewed Han Man-ho, who has been working as a party planner. He is the chief of the Party Department in Daks Club, an agency connecting party planners with people who don't know how to hold a party. Let's learn something about party planners...........................................................................................Ed
The Definition of a Party Planner
Party planner is a person who makes a party. Also, they are called "organizer" or "manager." They direct all party activities from planning to inviting guests and facilitating a party. In short, they take responsibility for the whole party. They plan the theme, and event, arrange the food, and choose the place and the people who attend the party.
Some party planners periodically hold their own parties after deciding on certain themes. Then, they announce their parties through their Internet sites and people come. They make suitable parties according to customers' requests, which are for birthdays, wedding anniversaries, etc.
Parties are divided into seasons, national cultures and special needs. 1) Seasons: Christmas and Halloween parties are held by seasons. 2) National Cultures: they are designed by each country's character like a Hawaiian party, Mexican party and Indian party. 3) Special Needs: they are held about twice in a month. In Aug 10, for example, a "Horror Party" was held after the preview of "The Eye", a horror movie about a person who sees a ghost. Mr. Han decided on the horror theme to bring down the hot summer temperature. "It was a really good experience for me. And it was a suitable theme for that humid day. But it would be better if the party was designed to help me hold conversations with new people," said a guest at that party.
The Present State of a Party Planner
A party is explained as an omnibus event that puts new life into our daily routine. Cosmopolitan people want to experience special things, which they can't easily meet every day. That is, they want to have a day to remember. In that respect, a party planner is high value-added job. However, it is a very new position in Korea and few Koreans have little understanding of the job. There are only 20 party planners now working in Korea. They usually organize more than 4 parties a month, and the average salary is 30 million won a year. Some are paid more depending on their ability.
The Way to Be a Party Planner
Party culture is not established in Korea yet. And there are no suitable courses in university curriculums. There are no specific qualifications to be a party planner. However, it is helpful to understand performance planning and stage arranging to be a party planner.
Of course, you must like and enjoy parties and be a socially active person who likes to meet people. Remember, a party is different from an event. Events are static. People just sit on their seats and look at something specific at events. On the other hand, parties are dynamic. So guests can wander from room to room.
Merits and Hardships of a Party Planner
"I feel encouraged when participants had a good time and enjoyed themselves at my parties," Mr. Han said. Many people are unfamiliar with partying in Korea. So party planners make it easy for them by preparing an event, such as a cinema preview or a vacation trip to the outdoors.
He added, "It's both difficult and important to determine a party theme. And the success of a party depends on how well its program progresses. So I have a file containing about 200 party themes."
Mainly people in their thirties have taken part in parties until now. However, even people who haven't had enough chances to enjoy their leisure time respond to parties positively.
