There are many samulhams (private lockers) in Dongguk University. In this issue, The Dongguk Post deals the use and condition of samulham. The Post came to the conclusion that DU's samulham policy needs immediate changes........................................................Ed.
The lack of space on campus brings about many problems. Compared with the number of students, there are few places for them. Although many Donggukians request their own personal space, nothing is offered to them. Students need more seminar rooms and places for studying and resting. Professors also need their own offices. The samulham problem is similar, because students want more samulhams but the places to put samulhams are already full, especially in Dongguk Hall. Other campus buildings' conditions are also not satisfactory with students.
Facility Management (FM) purchased strong samulhams and changed some old samulhams to new ones last year and this year. However, FM does not manage all the samulhams on campus. In six colleges, including Buddhist Studies and Liberal Art, each college administrative department manages its samulhams under the control of FM.
On the other hand, student representatives of five other colleges are in charge of managing their samulhams. There is a problem that most samulhams that are not in control of FM are likely to remain old-fashioned. Students used to ask FM to change the old ones. But there has been no change because DU authorities don't have enough surplus to satisfy the demand.
The worst problem is that some students who use samulhams are very selfish. According to Yi Chun-jong, the head of FM, some students use their samulhams irresponsibly. For example, some seniors left their samulhams locked after graduation. So FM called them several times but they never opened them nor returned their keys.
Thus, FM had to break open samulhams, which makes them useless. "I want every student to be concerned about small things that influence others," said Yi Chun-jong.
However, DU's samulhams are generally better than other universities'. For example, freshmen and sophomores can not use samulhams in Sogang University (SU). Because SU doesn't have the available space to install additional samulhams anymore.
At Hanyang University (HU) two students share one samulham until their graduation. On the other hand, even DU freshmen can have their own samulhams after paying some money.
Nonetheless, some students' misuse of samulhams make other students who want to use them angry.
FM listens to students' requests about samulhams and does its best to satisfy them despite potential danger or bodily harm.
The danger or harm are:
1) Some buildings' passageways are too narrow because of too many samulhams, which makes walking through them very difficult.
2) This is a violation of "SoBangBub (The Fire Services Act)." If a big fire breaks out in a building whose passageways are too narrow, people cannot get out of the building quickly.
3) Some of samulhams, especially MyongJin Hall, block the sunshine and wind from outside. This is an infringement of Donggukians' right to sunshine. Naturally, students who use samulhams irresponsibly should change their attitude. And the people who manage samulhams must penalize students who use samulhams irresponsibly.
At Ewha University, for example, students who don't keep the samulham rules must pay a fine. DU authorities should introduce like measures. They should not delay.
It's high time that FM and samulham users solve samulham problems. It's also time to consider others who don't use them. Both students and authorities must cooperate.
