   First-year students who have entered university after a difficult entrance exam must be excited and looking forward to their future campus life. At the same time, however, there is a fear of society that they experience for the first time and a vague concern about finding the information they need. Furthermore, it is difficult for new students to acquire information that only seniors who have experienced university life can teach, such as know-how in scheduling timetables and shortcuts to school.

   Therefore, before university life begins, it is necessary to provide new students with the required information and ease their worries. Thus, the university offers pre-entrance education for new students and holds an event where seniors and first- year students can meet and communicate. Furthermore, as COVID-19 has been declining this year, the “New Student Orientation,” suspended due to new coronavirus infections, will be revived face-to-face. Therefore, the Dongguk Post covered some freshman events held at Dongguk University.

Various events held for freshmen at Dongguk University

   The university operates a pre-education program for early adaptation to university life and motivation for learning for new students who have passed through early recruitment and admission. This program aims to improve understanding of major studies after admission and strengthen basic academic competence through appropriate training. The course period is from January 30th to February 3rd. It includes “Early Start to Job Success” and “English Speaking Practice (Basic)” organized by the Center for Cultural and Foreign Studies, “Creating Your Own Content by Using Scratch” and “Animation Realized by Coding” organized by the Center for Convergence Education. New students can take up to two credits, and it will be reflected in the 2023 common semester grades through the P/F evaluation method. In addition, students can enter the central library and read the materials before entering the school.

   Before the start of the first semester of 2023, “Dreamer,” the student division comprehensive admission ambassadors at Dongguk university, conducts a program named “Dream for Fresh” to welcome new students. It aims to help new students adapt to school, share information, and make memories with their peers. Each session was held on January 26th and 27th by date. The activities included introducing “Dreamer,” watching video clips supporting the school club, introducing school information, hosting games for each team, and answering questions. Through the program, new students could learn about the school and spend time making friends with their peers. Woo Da-hyeon (Food Science and Biotechnology 23) said that she wanted to know more about the campus life, so she participated in the “Dream for Fresh” program. She said the program was great since she could get useful information about a double major or the way to buy common culture classes’ books. She was able to solve her questions during the program. Hong Ju-hyun (Political Science and Diplomacy 23) expressed her feelings and said that the program was 

really helpful to schedule and register her timetable. Since courses are so different from high school, the class registration was the most difficult part for her when preparing for the first semester. She also said the team-game time was the best because students from all different departments could become one during that time. “I could experience the miracle on that time,” she said.

The New Student Orientation has returned to face-to-face events

   The “New Student Orientation” is where students and first-year students gather to talk  about school life in general and to communicate with each other to promote friendship among seniors and freshmen. It is organized by a student council and held by each department for two nights and three days after moving outside the school. First-year students and seniors all participate in the event. Students can join it as the new student orientation preparation team, student volunteer team or just the status of students. In the “New Student Orientation,” senior students tell the overall campus life including the introduction of daily life in Dongguk university, explanation about school clubs, introduction and guidance of courses registered for each department. Games for the promotion of friendship and performances by the performance division clubs are also prepared. Unfortunately, the event was canceled until 2022 as the COVID-19 made it impossible to hold face-to-face events where many people gathered. However, starting this year, COVID-19 has been declining, and the new student orientation has been revived using the existing method. Joo Je-hyeong (College of Buddhist Studies 21), the member of the new student orientation preparation team, expressed his feelings and said that he was glad to join the new student orientation as preparation team since it was the first time to be held face-to-face in three years. He also gave his own tips for new students at Dongguk university. “If you are thinking of a double major, I recommend you taking classes in that major beforehand when you are a first-year student. One more thing, you had better finish taking common culture courses in your freshman and sophomore year!”

    First-year students can experience campus life in advance, get the information necessary for university life, and meet and communicate with their peers and seniors through the events held for new students. In addition, an educational program will be organized to strengthen the ability to study and prepare for major courses before entering the school. New students will be able to experience campus life due to the declined COVID-19. Therefore, freshmen who are looking forward to campus life in March should join the programs and feel the campus atmosphere. The Dongguk Post supports the precious new university life of every Dongguk University freshman.
