Let us find out the characteristics of the mass media
The definition of mass media is the machine or broadcast system of mass communications of mass information to an unspecified number of people using the techniques such as television, radio, magazines, and movies. Mass media influences the receiving public in many ways, and the influences that stand out in terms of career are as follows.
First, the contents of mass media provide the direct stimulus to our audiovisual receptors, so that the emotional appeal is heightened due to our thought processes, especially intuitive thinking, interacting with the abundant images. Therefore, the sensitivity of the receiver is boosted, and the receiver becomes emotional. Second, mass media contents give stimulation to receivers that they had never experienced before via audiovisual methods, leading them to develop new inspiration.
The correlation between the dream and the influence of media exists
There are a few factors deciding the future dream, including the mass media exerting an enormous influence. According to the announcement “Release of Career Education Survey Results” released by the Ministry of Education in 2016, the mass media accounted for 24.7%, 27.1%, and 21.7%, respectively, ranking the first and second among the pathways that South Korean elementary, middle and high school students became aware of their desired jobs.
Park Han-sol, the student of the Department of Nursing Science in Daejin University, who is dreaming of the Operating Room (OR) nurse said, “In the situation of having already decided to go to the department of nursing science, I saw a drama ‘Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim.’ After watching the drama, I had got interested in the OR, and I had been impressed by the professionalism and pride of the OR nurse. That is how I dreamed of becoming an OR nurse, and I have still been preparing to become one. I think the decision to dream by the media has positive effect like my case, however it is essential to research more information about the job.”
There are some considerations when our dream is influenced by the media
Likewise, the mass media can afford to affect our dreams. Therefore, there are some considerations when our dream is influenced by the media. First, media such as movies and dramas has some fictional features. It uses exaggerated stories and descriptions to fascinate the audience, and that creates room for viewers to become involved in the fictional feature. Second, the media tends to highlight the dramatic days and events rather than the continuous ordinary daily life. The actual duties or works an individual ordinarily has to perform are usually omitted. If we encounter the job through the media such as movies or dramas, we can lose our interest in the job due to its repetitional or ordinary works, since the media focuses only on the dramatic aspects of the job, usually.
There are a few methods to use the media for the career exploration
If we use the mass media appropriately, it could help us to make a decision on our career through indirect experience from the media, acquiring career information or job. What are the methods to use the mass media effectively for career exploration? We had better reflect on whether our view of our dream job is affected by the media having some fictional or creative features. At this time, it is helpful to communicate with people who watched that media and share your thoughts, then you can experience a variety of viewpoints. We can use the media properly to search for our career if we keep in mind that the features of ideal contents in the media.
In the world where new media appears day after day, if there is a Donggukian who has many worries about making a decision on a career, recognizing the influence of media and its importance would be helpful. The people who have already decided on their career might also find it helpful to get better job satisfaction if they consider the factor of their own career decision by reflecting on if they were influenced by the media, and check whether they know obviously about their dream job and duties.
