I have dreamed of being an interpreter for three years in high school. With the passion and drive to achieve my dream, I entered the Department of English Language and Literature of Dongguk University as the first step toward getting closer to my dream. As a second step, I entered the Dongguk Post, the English newspaper club of Dongguk University. The most important quality of interpreters that I felt while doing various activities during high school was communication skills. I was able to learn the importance of communication so that everyone including the listener could easily understand what I was trying to say and what I understand, and that other person could clearly express it in various ways like me, and sympathize with what I felt. Then, I suddenly thought that it was a place where I could utilize what I learned and that for me who usually likes English, the club that I must enter is the Dongguk Post.
At first, I just came in because I like English, but it was not easy to adjust as a cub reporter. I actually thought I just had to write an article in English, but in reality, I had to go through numerous processes to write an article, and I was able to learn a lot in this process. According to the characteristics of newspaper articles, I had to refrain from my personal opinion as much as possible and maintain a neutral perspective, but this was not as easy for me as I thought. In addition, I was able to meet various people and conduct interviews, listen to many people’s positions on one event, and think about the direction of writing articles. Therefore, I thought it would be remembered as a meaningful experience in college life for a long time. While the work of publishing a newspaper article will not be easy, as the seniors said, even in difficult moments, my experience in the Dongguk Post would help me to endure hard moments and trust myself. Likewise, what is certain is that my experience in here will be a big support for my future life.
Time flew really fast as I worked as a cub reporter. I feel good about becoming a Post reporter, but at the same time, I feel a greater sense of responsibility as a reporter. In the Post, I can write articles in English on various issues from a student’s point of view and feel proud when the articles gather to create newspaper. I hope to become a reporter with improved article skills and this opportunity will give me a chance to learn more and grow up into a better person.
