   The 24th Winter Olympics were held in Beijing, China, from February 4th to 20th. 2,871 athletes from 91 countries participated in 15 events and 109 detailed events. In South Korea, 65 athletes participated in 13 events. The entire nation focused on our athletes. South Korea won a total of nine medals with two gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals, finished by 14th in the total ranking.

   There was a controversy over doubtful judgment at the short track speed skating event, a trusty event in the Olympics that has given Korea 24 gold medals since being first included in the official event in 1992. In the semifinals of the men’s short track speed skating 1,000m event, Hwang Dae-heon, who showed a perfect in-course overtake without any contact with the opponent Chinese players, and Lee June-seo got unconvincing disqualification. In addition, many players slipped during the race due to ice quality problem. However, despite these unfavorable ice-rink conditions, Hwang Dae-heon won the gold medal in the men’s 1,500m event, which was the first gold medal of South Korea at the Beijing Winter Olympics.

   Kwak Yoon-gy is running his YouTube channel as a window to introduce Winter olympic sports regularly as they are relatively unpopular and get attention only during the Winter Olympics period. He received public attention by posting videos of the atheletes’ daily lives in the athletes’ village and showed his last dance as a national team by winning a silver medal at the men’s short track speed skating 5,000m relay event. He also announced retirement of his career as an athlete through his YouTube channel. During the Olympics, the number of his YouTube channel subscribers has increased more than one million, which is now over 1.2 million.

   Team Kim, the women’s curling team who made a miracle of winning the first medal in the curling event four years ago at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, struggled to get to the Olympics. They missed the chance to go directly to the Olympics, finishing 7th at the 2021 World Championships. However, they finally made it after winning Latvia at the final preliminary round. At the Olympics, unfortunately, with four wins and five losses, Team Kim finished their Olympics journey tied for 6th place.

   Besides the players mentioned above, every national team player wore proud Taegeuk marks and showed their efforts of the past four years, giving joy to the entire nation. Let us applaud the athletes who have done their best over the past 16 days and look forward to the next Winter Olympics in Milan.
