In Dongguk University, there are many culture classes that cannot be taken in other schools. For example, students who entered Dongguk University must complete the required liberal arts class, “Buddhism and Humanity.” Through this class, students learn about the culture of Buddhism and understand the history of our school. Furthermore, they can learn how to meditate with a monk through a class called “Self and Meditation.” As such, there are many liberal arts lectures in Dongguk University which enhances students’ culture education.
Dongguk University has planned a number of new programs to develop students’ liberal arts classes. Two contests were held to actively accept and reflect students’ opinions. The first one was “Handwriting Contest for Life Liberal Arts Lectures That Changed My Life.” This contest was held under three themes; specific cases that brought changes in oneself, cases in which the five core competencies of our university were acquired, and specific cases in which abilities and qualifications were cultivated. The purpose of this contest was to understand the influence of liberal arts classes on students. Applications were accepted until November 26th, and the results will be announced on December 8th.
The second contest was an idea contest to open a new general liberal arts class. Students could select and apply from one of these three subjects; a subject that can understand and implement the Buddhist spirit, contribute to the development of our university and local history, or develop creative problem-solving ability. Applications for this contest were opened until November 17th, and the results will be announced on November 30th. Judging criteria for each contest can be found on the Dongguk University website. Prize money and awards are also available.
Opportunities to communicate with students have decreased due to the activation of non-face-to-face classes. Therefore, the school is making various efforts to collect students’ opinion. As liberal arts classes take a large portion of lectures during school life, students can get better quality classes if they actively express their opinions. The Dongguk Post hopes students give a lot of participation and interest in the new contest held by Dongguk University.
