How many cups of coffee did you drink today? Coffee has become indispensable to modern people. To get rid of sleepiness in morning or to stay awake until late night, we look for drinks containing caffeine, such as coffee or energy drink. Caffeine is a type of alkaloid contained in the fruits, leaves, and seeds of some plants such as coffee, cacao, and tea. When absorbed in human body, caffeine stimulates the central nervous system, increasing wakefulness and alleviating fatigue. Normally, caffeine is effective within an hour of intake, and the effect decreases after three or four hours.
Caffeine is being widely consumed these days through many ways. It is contained not only in coffee or energy drinks, but also in some favorite foods such as soft drinks or chocolates and even in some medicines such as headache pills and painkillers. Aside from drinking coffee, we are taking in caffeine without knowing it.
Excessive caffeine intake interrupts you from having a deep sleep. As caffeine promotes gastric acid secretion, excessive gastric acid secretion can cause gastric ulcers and reflux esophagitis. Drinking coffee in morning with an empty stomach is therefore an especially bad habit. Also, drinking coffee excessively will gradually make your body get used to caffeine and become tolerant to it. In turn, the amount of caffeine required to wake you up will increase. As you try to quit drinking coffee instantly, withdrawal symptoms such as fatigue and headache may bother you.
Caffeine intake is not necessarily bad. Taking appropriate amount of caffeine promotes metabolism and improves concentration and physical ability. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the recommended daily amount of caffeine is up to 400 milligrams or less for adults. This is the amount of caffeine consumed when drinking about two to three cups of coffee. However, as appropriate caffeine intake amount varies depending on each person’s physical constitution, knowing your appropriate caffeine intake amount is important.
If you think you are consuming too much caffeine, look for other ways to get rid of tiredness. Drinking much water helps you eliminate excessive caffeine stored in your body. Drinking decaffeinated coffee or green tea, which has much less caffeine compared to coffee, can help you reduce caffeine intake. How about trying chewing gum or light exercises such as stretching to get rid of tiredness? Try not to rely on caffeine too much and live a vibrant life!
