In the 2021 JoongAng Ilbo university evaluation released on November 10th, Dongguk University ranked ninth place, the highest level ever, rising eight notches from the previous result (17th in 2019 and not conducted in 2020).
The JoongAng Ilbo university evaluation compares the competitiveness of universities not in the order of entrance exam grades, but through 33 quantitative indicators in four areas: professor research, educational conditions, student education effort and performance, and reputation. As each university has different strengths, it is to provide various information to educational consumers. This year, 51 major universities in the country were evaluated.
Dongguk University entered the “top 10” for the first time in history, ranking fifth in student education (previously eighth), 12th in professor research (previously 27th), 13th in reputation (previously 16th), and 26th in educational conditions (previously 22nd). Although our university remained in 17th place for four years from 2016 to 2019, it has been reborn as a research-oriented university through the “Energize Dongguk” project, and has achieved good results by rising in research rankings and strength in student employment and entrepreneurship.
In particular, in the research sector, which accounts for 32% of the JoongAng Ilbo university evaluation, Dongguk University ranked 11th in citations per paper in international journals, 27th in technology transfer income per science and technology professor, and 26th in intramural research expenses per professor.
In addition, the most notable thing in the evaluation is the student education sector. The student education sector is an index that evaluates the university’s efforts to make students advance into society, such as the quantity and quality of employment or entrepreneurship, field training, or entrepreneurship education. In this year’s evaluation, the JoongAng Ilbo evaluated not only the quantitative performance of student star-ups, such as Start-up subsidies and the number of companies, but also the qualitative level such as sales per company, the number of employees and support personnel for Start-ups. Dongguk University ranked fifth with 54.78 points out of 80 in this evaluation, ranking in the top 10 for both the net employment rate and the retained employment rate, and proved to be an excellent university in the quantity and quality of employment.
Upon hearing the results of the university evaluation, Yoon Sung-yee, president of Dongguk University, returned to his original intention to embody the founding ideology of “Educational Security Bureau” and focused on education, the basis of the university. Also, to fulfill responsibilities as a research institute, he attempted to improve the constitution to a research-oriented university through the “Energize Dongguk.” President Yoon said that the synergy of education and research has made a great result. He also added that with the inauguration of the construction committee, which was launched in April, Dongguk University will continue to move beyond “Energize Dongguk” and toward “Globalize Dongguk.”
