Last September, a student reported that water leaked from the ceiling when it rained at Arisu Bookcafe in Wonheung Hall, one of the school buildings. In this cafe, water drops fell from the ceiling whenever it rained. The only way to solve this problem was to put a bucket and receive rainwater, and the cleaner always emptied the bucket on rainy days. Rainwater dripping from the ceiling is a problem that must be resolved because people may fall and be injured by slipping in the water. The General Student Council (GSC) has continuously demanded the school to set up a discussion for old school facilities and to resolve them as soon as possible, but no substantial changes have been made yet.
Students’ complaints about the old facilities in the school have constantly occurred. In particular, in Wonheung Hall, there are many cases where water leaks or the heating equipment does not work properly in spaces for students, such as lecture rooms. Also, there are many other problems that need to be improved in many other facilities. In addition to Wonheung Hall, outdoor facilities such as Manhae Square and Main Stadium also have problems that could threaten the safety of students, such as broken stairs and hollow concrete floors.
Lee, a junior of Dongguk University, said, “The old facilities in the school are a very important issue directly related to the safety of students. We do not think that repairing the buildings can be done in a short period of time. However, if the other buildings are improved step by step after repairing Wonheung Hall, which is the oldest facility, as soon as possible, students will be able to enjoy a safe school life.”
About this issue, Lee Jin-bok, Dongguk University’s staff of the office of facility and management, said, “The school is aware of problems with old facilities. We are checking facilities monthly, and when the problem is detected, we take immediate action and check if it is completely solved. If the problem cannot be resolved immediately, we take temporary measures to eliminate the inconvenience of students and ensure their safety.”
