Dongguk University’s Academy of Buddhist Studies has ended its Humanities Korea (HK) project this year, which has lasted for 10 years. The HK project is sponsored by National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) to foster humanities research personnel. The HK research group at Dongguk University’s Academy of Buddhist Studies was selected as the HK project group in the field of Humanities and Social Science in 2011. It has conducted a research agenda called “Korean Characteristic of Glocality: Discourse on Cultural Expansion in Buddhist Studies.”

   Dongguk University’s HK research group has been active for 10 years with the goal of “Building a total system that combines research and education based on literature data,” “Agenda research using global network from East Asia, North America, and Europe and the international spread of achievements,” and “A leap forward as a world class research center for Buddhist studies as Korean studies.” The achievements of Dongguk University’s HK research group evaluated by the NRF are largely summarized into three categories. First, it published research books and themed Korean Buddhist series with a panoramic view of the glocality of Korean Buddhism, and published papers in overseas journals several times to conduct high-quaility Buddhist research and academic activities. Second, it established an educational system that combined research and education by opening “Department of Interdisciplinary Studies of Korean Buddhism (currently Department of East Asian Buddhist Literature Translation)” at general graduate school course, selecting a number of domestic and foreign students, and producing 10 Ph.Ds. Lastly, the Buddhist Academy’s HK project produced 12 full-time instructors during the agenda process, succeeding in fostering research personnel.

   The NRF evaluated that the HK research group’s achievements established the characteristics of Buddhist studies in terms of the universality and specificality called global and regional, and their integration. Also, the HK research group successfully carried out the project with a focus on studying the Korean characteristic of glocality.
