   In the school’s online community site Everytime, a new word came up, “unopened used items,” so-called “mi-gae-bong-jung-go” in Korean. This is a metaphorical word for freshmen in 2020 who could not enjoy school life due to COVID-19. The school life of freshmen has changed significantly. Although eight months have passed since they entered Dongguk University, they have rarely visited the school and are not even knowing their classmates and seniors’ faces. In order to encourage freshmen who cannot fully enjoy their school life, the General Student Council (GSC) held “online meeting for freshmen.”

   The online meeting for freshmen was held for three days from October 2nd to 4th. The participants were accepted in order of application, and the total number of students who participated in the meeting was 105 people, 35 people a day. The application for the meeting was scheduled to accept from September 21st to September 24th, but it received so much attention that the application was closed early on September 22nd. This meeting consisted of various events and gifts such as cyber campus tours, awards for quizzes and recreation, and online after-party. During the meeting, the participants could look at each other’s faces and communicate by turning on their cameras. Lee, a sophomore of Dongguk University, said “It was a pity that students who entered school in 2020 could not even get an opportunity to enjoy things that can only be enjoyed when they are freshmen such as the entrance ceremony, Orientation (OT) and Membership Training (MT). ” She also added, “However, I think it is just as well that they have time to talk to each other face-to-face through this online meeting. Although they can not go to school and are living a boring life, I hope that all freshmen will have a lively school life through various events such as the online meeting for freshmen.”

   The GSC said, “We planned this event in the hope that freshmen, who are in a situation where they cannot enjoy the campus life and do not know who their classmates are due to COVID-19, would know each other and the school more through online. We wanted to be with as many people as possible, but it was regrettable that the number of people who can participate was limited due to the nature of the event.” They also said that they will plan more various events though internal meeting if the online meeting for freshmen is well received.
