Any students of Dongguk University may have heard about the main auditorium. Since its completion in December, 1958, the main auditorium, which is located on the third floor of the main building of the university, has served as the center for learning and communication among Donggukians for the past 60 years. Various events such as domestic and foreign academic events and lectures by celebrities, as well as club performances and graduation ceremonies for students were held in the auditorium. In such a meaningful place, the Office of University Relations and Development decided to launch a “main auditorium naming donation campaign.” This is a campaign to engrave one’s name and story along with a certain amount of donations to 433 seats in the main auditorium. It is meaningful that the most historic place in the university is recreated into a space that contains stories from countless people.
After the campaign was unveiled, numerous people including alumni of Dongguk University, faculty members, and Buddhists have participated. Ven Sung Woo Sunim, the Chairman of Dongguk University, sent the phrase, “The place we first met in the most shining days of our lives.” Also, Yoon Sung-yee, the President of Dongguk University, participated with the phrase, remarking, “Gratitude, consideration, and respect, these are the power to make our lives richer and happier.” In addition, the Chairman of the alumni association and a senior alumnus participated. The president of the General Student Council, two alumni in Business Administration who entered university in 1964, and anonymous Buddhists also left phrases for the campaign.
The main auditorium naming donation is open to anyone if they fill out and submit applications on the website of the Office of University Relations and Development. Of the 433 seats which are divided into S, A, and B seats, participants can choose the seat they want, and write about 20 words or so for the nameplate. The donation amount will be two million won for S seats, one million won for A seats, and 500,000 won for B seats. The donations will be used preciously to improve the educational environment for students and develop Dongguk University. If you participate in this campaign, your message, name, major/admission year or position you write on the application will be engraved in the nameplate. The 433 stories to be contained on 433 nameplates will be revealed later, on the website of Dongguk University’s development fund.
