Last March 31st, the school’s new General Student Council (GSC) uploaded a post saying, “The student council officials suddenly began to restrict access to the student hall, which was partially allowed to us.” What happened between them and caused the President to shut down the student hall?
The day before the GSC’s rights were restricted, the GSC asked the President to resolve the issue, pointing out that there was no proper communication between school and students. Lee Je-joon, president of GSC, said, “We thought that we should understand the various policies that the school makes and cooperate with each other, so we were waiting because we thought it would be well if the demands were resolved even if it takes some time. However, the answer was too late, so we went to see him in person.” He also said that there was a problem with the president’s attitude toward students and he thought the school needed a structural change. Therefore, he said that the school needs more people to receive students’ opinions.
Other than the lack of communication, the school did not properly restrict students and outsiders who come to school. Therefore, the GSC thought that they should be more thorough in order to prevent the disease and keep the school safe. However, the day after the process of conveying the opinions of the students to the president, the faculty suddenly blocked the student council members from entering the school. Regarding this, the GSC uploaded a post that says the school should strongly condemn the mistakes, asking for an apology. The next day, on April 1st, they set up banners criticizing the president’s attitude around Paljeongdo. Also, the president of GSC carried out a four-member picketing for the request for communication, with the past presidents of GSC and went into the President’s office to deliver the requests.
An official meeting with the school was held on Friday, April 3rd. Yoon Sung-yee, the President of Dongguk University, firstly felt sorry for less comunication with the students, promising he is willing to issue an official statement soon about opening offline lectures. Also, he said he would actively collect students’ opinions by making student representatives to participate in the school decision-making committee. In addition, he promised to have regular meetings with student representatives on a quarterly basis, and to assign a staff exclusively charge for students as written in the request.
The president of GSC said that from now on, the GSC will put the students first and will fight hard when they fight and communicate with harmony hard when it needs to.
