“I am crazy~ getting crazy~" Ji Byung- su (77), recently sang Son Dam-bi’s “Crazy” in KBS National Singing Contest. He became popular Senior Star. Senior Star refers to people who have become famous in their later years. There are numerous ways of being a Senior Star such as audition program for seniors held by the broadcasting company Silver Eye TV. With such increase, Senior Stars are drawing attention recently.
Numerous Senior Stars are expanding their influence
After Ji Byung-su appeared in a promotional video for shopping membership, “L. CLUB” and was invited as the first pitcher for the KT baseball team on May 11th. Kim Chil-doo (65), who is known as a famous Senior Model, had run a restaurant for a long time before he became a model. After he retired, he decided to be a fashion model with his daughter’s recommendation and made his official debut at Hera Seoul Fashion Week in March 2018. Recently, he is expanding his scope of activities as a fashion magazine model and an actor.
Park Mak-rye (72) can be called a pioneer of Senior Star in Korea. She started her YouTube activity to make memories with her grand-daughter before suffering from dementia. Now, she became one of the famous YouTubers in Korea and has 880 thousand YouTube subscribers. She had been introduced in Vogue of the United States, a world-renowned magazine and attended the Macau International Film Festival. Also, she is expanding her activities to other areas, such as filming various commercials and publishing books.
People support Senior Stars regardless of generation
How do other seniors think about Senior Stars? For this question, an ordinary elderly person, Oh Hang-kyun (70) answered, “It is very good to see them enjoying their life. Sharing energy and passion of themselves with other people makes everybody happy. The most important thing in our life cycle is enjoying life and being happy.”
Not only seniors took a positive view for Senior Stars but also young people supported their bravery. Um Jae-young (Sophomore, Department of Computer Application Electronics) of Seoil University, said “I think people were moved by their bravery and willpower which made them stick to their way. It is good to see them achieve what they want even though they are seniors already.” Also, a high school student Lee Shin-jae (16) commented, “I think they play the role as a connector who could make better relationship between seniors and the youth. They are cool because they have so much passion in their old age.”
Why is the number of Senior Stars increasing?
A development of SNS can be a background which makes Senior Stars get attention these day. When some interesting video clips are uploaded on the Internet, these can be spread through SNS and be popular in a short time. The case of Senior Star, Ji Byung-su can be an example of it since the video clip became famous through Facebook or Instagram. Also, as the society is changing, seniors who want to show their individuality are increasing. Senior Stars Kim Chil-doo, Park Mak-rye, and Ji Byung-su were just normal people, but they found their second term of life after being a senior.
As such, Senior Stars are getting popular generation-over-generation, building their own field, which makes a distinction with young stars. With the change of society, more seniors will start their social life as senior. Furthermore, the presence of Senior Stars with their own unique personalities and charms will be highlighted in future societies that demand individuality and specialty.
