Among high interest from the faculty and students, professor Yoon Sung-yee, Department of Food Industrial Management was elected as the 19th President of Dongguk University on February 8th. The election process lasted for approximately two months, starting from December. In detail, a total of 11 candidates registered for the 19th presidency. After the discussion between the four-party body which included the faculty council, employee union, the General Student Council (GSC) and corporate body office, the indirect election system was decided as the formal election methodology.
At first, the four-party council agreed the direct election is the most effective alternative to overcome the crisis such as indifference of students and has even established a concrete institutional framework. However, they decided to keep the indirect election system without notifying the students why and how that decision was made.
Before the election, there was a public presidential candidate debate on January 28th, allowing 11 candidates to answer questions which were received through social media about their pledge and religious beliefs. Then, the Presidential Candidate Recommendation Committee(PCRC), consisting of professors, school officials, alumni, Jogye Order, undergraduate and graduate students, reflected all those processes and nominated the three final candidates to the board.
Professor Cho Eui-yon, Lee Eun-gi and Yoon Sung-yee were the following candidates. They had two common traits such as being a faithful buddhist and pledging to cooperate with the buddhism community. During the candidate debate, professor Yoon Sung-yee answered a question regarding how to activate research among professors saying “I would try to change current administration structure and provide strong support for professors who commit to their work.”
However, some points regarding transparency caused a small controversy. During the debate, free question and answer sessions among candidates with the audience were banned. Furthermore, the number of votes was not disclosed to the public without any logical reason, too.
Nevertheless, Through those enduring process, 12 board executives unanimously voted professor Yoon Sung-yee as the 19th President of Dongguk University. Since 2000, he has participated in the college community as the director of Center for Teaching and Learning and Chairman of Cooperative welfare. Moreover, he is well-known for establishing DREAM PATH+, the student capacity building system. The newly elected President’s term starts on March 1st and will be in the position until February 28th, 2023. In the President auguration ceremony, President Yoon said, “I will build up the environment and decision making system which can make Donggukians to demonstrate their abilities sufficiently."
The process of 19th presidential election seems to have different aspects as a means of transparency due to a change like public presidential candidate debate. However, there are also some doubts remained whether the process really guaranteed transparency.
