As professor Yoon Sung-yee has been elected of the President of Dongguk Univerisity on February 8th this year and "Han Gul-eum," the General Student Council (GSC), begins its term in office, The Dongguk Post interviewed Han Gul-eum to find out their ideas concerning the election of the president and their plans for the pledge.

Q. Do you have any of president Yoon’s major pledges that you would like to cooperate with more attention?

   Kim Jong-heon: There are some good things about his pledges. First, the best part was that the President is considering about the facilities used by students unlike other candidates. For example, specific pledges to supplement rest areas and classrooms were impressive. However,  I think he should have mentioned more about the old facilities.
Furthermore, it was good to know that the President will work hard to understand the demand for better education. Currently, there are many students who failed to sign up for liberal arts courses and who are unhappy with the overall lectures. I am looking forward to the president’s solutions.

   Yeo Dae-hee: President Yoon said that he would work for a decent campus. We would like to cooperate more with the pledge branding the campus because we also promised for it. Accordingly, we are going to remodel the Student Hall, brand the building, install stairs and set light at ‘Heol-ddeok slope.’

We would like to start with things that could get long-term benefit with less effort. The installation of a building entrance system, unmanned cabins, and the formation of reasonable liberal arts courses can be the examples. Those three plans could produce effective outcome because once we invest, it lasts for decades.

Q. President Yoon said that he will try hard to communicate and cooperate with school members. Do you have any specific plans to interact with the school?

   Kim Jong-heon: The President Yoon Sung-yee said, he is planning to hold a meeting called “Lunch with the President.” I think this is flexible and unconventional move. Since it is hard to have a meeting with the President, the opportunity to have a meal together and have a conversation seems like a positive change. In addition, our plan for communication and harmony is to hold a teaching committee, which has been running since 2017, once or twice a year. Presidents of the GSC, of each college, and of the association and students participate in this committee. Demands for school-related matters are discussed here and passed to the Office of Student Affairs. In reality, even though there is such discussion, these demands were not accepted by the school. Therefore, from now on, we are going to communicate with the President on the basis of the details.

Q. At the latest public hearing, repairing the heating system at the Student Hall seemed like an urgent task. Is there any progress?

Kim Jong-heon: As president Yoon’s term has not begun, it is difficult to execute his pledges. Nothing has been done yet, but once the President’s term begins, we will make efforts to communicate such as asking for a meeting with the President Yoon and not just to renovate the student center but to remodel the entire building. However, I think remodeling the entire building might not be proceeded in a short term since there are many things to consider. In the future, we will improve the situation through interaction with the President.

Q. Considering all of this, isn’t the financial aspect the most important thing?

Kim Jong-heon: From a financial standpoint, I think we should work together with the President to get more donations from the external cooperatives rather than raising tuition. Also, extra budget will be left after using for other parts, so we might use these budgets to supplement the finances. In other words, in order to facilitate the pledges and have enough budgets, it is important to share in-depth opinions smoothly with not only the President Yoon but the President of each college and others in the committee.

Q. Please tell us anything you want to say to donggukians or aspiration as the new GSC.

Kim Jong-heon & Yeo Dae-hee: Now that our term is going to begin with the President Yoon, we hope we will be able to accurately understand the needs of Donggukians. Above all things, our best will is to communicate mutually with the school.
