In busy modern world, people need their own individual space to focus on themselves. In other words, they need “Querencia.” This term refers to shelter in Spanish. In Korea, it can be interpreted as finding a relaxing space. One of the reasons Querencia has become a trend nowadays is the exhaustion and stress people face due to their daily struggle of work and study. Fortunately, people are now trying to find quality time for themselves to relieve their stress by visiting their favorite relaxing places. Querencia could be enjoyed in many different ways from home to Comic cafes and handicraft workshops. All that matters are taking a break from things that cause stress.
Home-gardening is creating your own Querencia
People prefer to be surrounded by their favorite things which make them feel relaxed, such as plants on the veranda and fluffy dolls in bed. Home-gardening takes little effort to create a nice and cozy place like a hanging garden or a bulbous plant.
Hanging gardens can be easily made even in a tight and narrow space by using a hook to hang the plant in the air or nail it to a wall. The idea is popular among people who want to bring nature indoor. Raising a bulbous plant is another idea to create a refreshing atmosphere indoors. It is a plant that stores nutrients in its roots like Tulips, Daffodils and Hyacinths. These plants mostly have bright colors and nice scent which lighten up the mood of your own house. They are also easy to manage and bloom repeatedly, which could be an appealing factor to people who love to be surrounded by nature.

Surround yourself with Self-interior
Self-interior is another way of making Querencia. It has become popular with Social Network Service(SNS) with Hashtag of “Online house warming.” People share their interior ideas on SNS for example, by decorating with removable furniture and props. They feel soothed in the ambience of favorite cafes or a relaxing space. Recently, small props such as cushions and rugs are becoming popular as they can drastically change the entire ambience of their house. In such case, the offline store IKEA is getting popular because it offers easily self-assembled furniture which can be delivered anywhere when customers buy it. In addition, the increasing popularity of online shopping malls such as 10X10 illustrates how many people crave to develop their own Querencia.
Regarding this, Lee Seung-hee, (Freshman, Theater arts) of Korea National University of Arts said, “I use my animal dolls to enjoy self-interior design. Their cute looks and soft furs make me feel relaxed. I think my home is the most appropriate Querencia for me because it has all of the things I need to make me relaxed.”

Comic cafe transforms into a convenient all-purpose room
Comic cafe is different from the ones in the past which only provided comics to read in a dusty old place. These days, they serve a variety of food from cake to Tteokbokki and offer convenience facilities such as cave rooms and shower facilities. Many people warmly welcome this new comic cafe, because these can be the new Querencia. For example, in the context of food, a comic cafe located in Jangji, “Jangmandong” is well-known for its delicious cheap food which was featured in Japanese dramas such as “Okonomiyawa” in “Late night restaurant”
Those who regard facility as an important factor to relax might prefer “Comic-bed” as their Querencia because it provides a variety of cave-rooms, sedentary rooms, or even rooms full of comfortable cushions. “I enjoy using Comic-bed on a daily basis because I can do everything there. I can rest if I am tired, use the computer and also eat food while reading comics.” said Kim Ju-young, (Sophomore, Church doctrine) of Korea Catholic University.
Handicraft workshop can heal your mind while creating masterpiece
Handicraft workshops have gained a huge popularity among young adults who alleviate stress by making hand-made products such as eco-bags. Many university students who are stressed out from their studies are finding new outlets: designing their own bags and jewelry. For instance, there is a place called “Mellow-out” at Uijeongbu which offer a one-day class for people who want to make their own eco-bag. The workshop displays fabrics in lots of colors and sizes which allow people to choose the kind of bags they want to make. Similarly, many young adults are getting interested in the antique French embroidery such as ‘Petit France.’ Regarding this social trend, Chun Hun-hee (42) the owner of “Petit France” said, “I think many university students enjoy coming to the handicraft workshop nowadays or go eye-shopping for antique items. They say the process of making something is healing and calming them unlike their daily routine.”
Home gardening and self-interior might be an appealing idea to people who enjoy Querencia in their own home. Adding some greenery and favorite props is one of the examples of creating a relaxing environment. On the other hand, visiting a comic cafe and a handicraft workshop could be a great idea to people who enjoy Querencia outdoors. How about finding your Querencia where you can relax your mind?
