After the issue of twins in Sookmyung Girls’ High School who were involved in stealing test questions, expulsion of twins from school was decided. There are some opinions that this penalty is severe, considering that they are just kids even though they were greedy to manipulate their grades. However, if the twins are not expelled from school, their fabricated grades will be accepted as their official grades. Then, this causes damages to other students’ grades, therefore, opinions that the penalty should not be limited just giving weak punishment, were dominant.
This issue brought a controversy on Korean entrance examination system. Some expressed that proportion of “Jung-shi” which is one of the korea’s entrance examine system and only got one chance to try, has to be expanded, while reducing “Soo-shi” which is the entrance system that considers transcript and so on. This opinion is conflicting with existing system since until now Korean examination system is giving importance on Soo-shi. The twins had eye on “Recommendation System of the President of School” of Soo-shi. It is a system in which only student who has high grade get recommendation from school is easier to enter the university. The reason why the controversy occurred on Soo-shi is because unlike Jung-shi, which has objectivity, criteria of Soo-shi is subjective and there could be some kinds of intervention in evaluation. This problem was revealed by the issue of the twins. In addition, another factor of making this important is the social atmosphere which is sensitive on the fairness. Everyone wants to be succesful in their life, but some people are born in wealthy family, while others have poor financial situation. In the social atmosphere where fairness is stressed, the issue of twins caused public rage.
Each Soo-shi and Jung-shi have their own pros and cons. In the case of Jung-shi, objectivity is guaranteed, but it is hard to show the students’ own capability since the chance of examination is limited to once a year. On the other hand, Soo-shi has an advantage that students can show their potentials throughout school years. In the past, to supplement the limit of Jung-shi, proportion of Soo-shi had been expanded in entrance system. However, due to the issue of the twins, Soo-shi was criticized that the system just gives an advantage to the upper class. Also, some people argue that Jung-shi has to increase or Jung-shi system should be only accepted in examination system. Unlike this current social atmosphere, a few years ago, people supported Soo-shi. Even if Korean entrance system is changed to focus on Jung-shi regarding this issue, someone might demand to expand Soo-shi after a few years later. Since Soo-shi and Jung-shi have their own merits and limits, we should consider not to be biased to only one system swayed by the social atmosphere. All we have to do is not to substitute to new problem for existing problem. Keep balancing between Soo-shi and Jung-shi, it is needed to be deliberate how to evaluate the potential of student with fair criteria.
