Special advice! It is a good idea to eat before reading this article in order not to be starving.
Hey guys! How have you been since last time? It is getting colder and colder these days. All I want is a nice hot chocolate with some Tteokbokki and a huge mug-cake. You may have been guessing what I am going to talk about since the first sentence: food! There are a lot to say about the food of my country, France.
The trait of French food culture
First, if we are talking about the food culture, there is a huge difference at the beginning between Korean “meal organization” and the French one. As you may know, French meal course has several parts like many other western countries: l’entree, le plat principal and le dessert are the names of those parts in French. The first one, l’entree, is like an introduction to the meal: small salty things like soup, toast, and salad. The second one, le plat principal, is the main meal, and we finish it with sweet things, le dessert, such as fruits, cakes, and yogurt. Moreover, in many restaurants, there are very small dishes to create a “transition” between each meal course. I think most of French eat cheese before the dessert. There are so many kinds of cheese that it makes us hard to decide!

What foreigners think about Korean food
By the way from French perspective, Korean food is considered very spicy! I know many French who are not able to eat spicy Korean food such as Tteokbokki or spicy chicken. Actually, French food is not spicy at all. There are very few French meals which can be called spicy, and maybe for Koreans they will not be spicy at all! Another curious thing I noticed when I arrived here is that most of Korean food taste sweet for me! I was not the only one to say that. A lot of other foreigners felt the same. Especially, the potato chips surprised us because those are not salty at all! (but it does not mean they are not good, of course).
As a person not used to eat Asian food in general, when I arrived Korea, lots of food seemed surprising to me! When some people said that Korean fried chicken is the best one, I did not trust them but now I understand. I think I could die very happily because of the Korean fried chicken overdose. However, there are some food I will never understand how people can eat. I am sure you know what I am talking about. Yes. Octopus, alive octopus. I do not think I can get used to the flavor of alive octopus. People gave advices all the time when I am eating that “Oh, you should chew it very hard or you may die.”
It is the same for “jokbal.” I am pretty sure it is very good. It looks very nice, but just thinking of the fact that it is pig’s foot makes me feel strange to be honest. Even though I wrote about strange food in Korea, I really love Korean food. We have a lot of very strange food in France as well. Indeed, French people love eating snails, frogs or “Baba au Rhum” which is basically not a cake with alcohol but more alcohol with a cake.

Different restaurant system between France and Korea
One more interesting thing is in restaurants. They are not working the same way at all! The “order part” is quite similar except the fact that it is common for the waiter to recommend you some specific meal in Korea. The biggest difference between Korean and French restaurants is related to water. In Korea, it is self-service, no need to ask. However, in France you have to ask each time you want some water. So, if you visit France, you cannot find water fountain even though you try to find it walking in the whole reatsurant. Furthermore, in Korean restaurants, most of the time you eat several food for free in an unlimited way such as the Kimchi, some soup or sometimes even rice. To be honest, but the only thing you can have for free and unlimited in a French restaurant is the bread. In general, restaurants are not really working the same way as well. For example, in France at the end of your meal, you have to ask the waiter to give you the bill and then you give him cash or credit card without moving from your table. The waiter is the one who moves, while in Korea you are the one who moves. Finally, do not be surprised if the waiter comes several times to ask you if everything is ok or if you need something. In addition, when you are going to a French restaurant, you should always ask about “Le plat du jour.” It is a kind of food which changes every day and it is not written on the menu. Most of the time, it is a bit cheaper as well.
I think we should stop here because you are going to hate me for making you that hungry. I am happy to have this discussion on food with you because I am sure we all agree that food have great importance in our life. No matter where you are from, there is always a meal that can warm you up. Food always tastes better when you have it with other people and that is the best common point between our different food culture. See you next time and enjoy your vacation period!
