Makeup is another way to express a country’s culture. Some of us will also say that it is a form of art which people can express themselves and their personalities. As makeup styles are nowadays spread by celebrities and influencers through media, some styles and cosmetics are becoming trends worldwide. For instance, a number of Korean cosmetic brands are appealing in other countries’ beauty industries. The Dongguk Post interviewed four international students to understand about the makeup style in their countries, as well as the different ways of doing makeup.

Q. What do you know about Korean Makeup style?
A. Some people think that Koreans do not use contouring at all, but I noticed that contouring and eye shadows are important in Korean makeup routines. I think that people do not notice it because K-makeup looks very discreet. They actually use it to
make their noses straighter or their eyes bigger. They also like to brighten their skin color which makes it look healthier.
Q. How do people do their makeup in your country? What are the main differences with Korean makeup style?
A. Koreans emphasize bright and whiter foundation with vivid colors of the lipstick. However, Taiwanese people usually prefer to wear natural makeup with a color of foundation that matches their own natural skin tone. On the other hand, since Korean dramas are becoming famous in Taiwan, more and more people are getting interested in the K-makeup style.
Q. Would you like to share some makeup advices or recommend some products that you personally like?
A. I personally prefer the inexpensiveness and quality of Lilybyred eyeliners and lip tints, as well as blushes from M.A.C. and shu uemura. Elle tints are also cheap and have a good watery texture. I think Clio eye shadows have very nice pigmentation of their colors.
Besides, it is important to know about individual skin tone because it gives information about which colors suit you better. I also think that it can help people to pick the right clothes and decorative makeup.

Q. What makeup style do people usually in your country? What is different from Korean makeup?
A. In India, makeup is not nearly as much of a craze as it is here, but there are a lot of people who are heavily invested in makeup for sure. I would say that the main difference with Korean makeup style is the eye makeup. We tend to really accentuate the eyes, using a lot of Kajal, called Kohl outside India, and usually some bright lipsticks to go with it.
Q. Do you know any beauty influencers such as YouTubers or celebrities?
A. I know a channel called Q2han. The channel is operated by two twin sisters, Qwon and Qjin, who are “two DIY enthusiasts” as they like to be called so. I really like the videos they make. I remember that both of them might have studied fashion in America. They are known for their fashion DIYs, beauty related tutorials, and style vlogs. I recommend their channel because these girls are very funny and their style is fairly inspiring.
Q. Can you give some makeup advices or recommend cosmetics that you prefer?
A. When you start makeup, watching tutorials can be helpful to give you strong knowledge about the basics of makeup. You need to start little by little and with practice, the result will be great! If I have to recommend one basic product that I like, it would be the lip balm plus tint two in one product at Urban Dollkiss.

Q. Please tell us what you recognize Korean makeup routine and cosmetics.
A. I believe that Koreans apply more skin products, such as various kinds of BB or CC creams, foundation, and powder in many layers. Also, I noticed that the Korean makeup trend does not encourage contouring. I think that it is more about being as pale as possible, so they use very white foundations. They also use toner, essence, face wash, hydrating masks, and many other products.
Q. What about the makeup style in your country? What are the main differences with Korea?
A. People in my country follow a mixture of trends. Many trends are similar to the U.S. trends, like contouring, bronzer, colored eye shadows and thick arched eyebrows. But there are still people who prefer lighter and more natural makeup. In my opinion, the main difference in makeup style between Romania and Korea is for sure the colors we pick for our foundations and the intensity of the makeup. Moreover, the Romanian makeup style can be considered quite strong even though it is not as strong as the American one. In Romania, contouring or using bronzer to look tanner is quite common. On the other hand, Korean makeup is usually much lighter, for example, thin eyeliner and light eye shadow colors.
Q. Have you ever experienced Korean cosmetics?
A. I did use Korean cosmetics but not as much as I should! I just used some products like eyeliner, makeup remover and face sheets from TONY MOLY, face cream from innisfree, and face and hand cream from Olive Young. I cannot say that I was highly impressed by their effects, but they were good. I definitely have to try more other products!
Q. Do you know any famous beauty influencers?
A. My favorite Beauty YouTuber is Bubzbeauty. She is Chinese but lives in Northern Ireland. I like her because she has a wide variety of makeup styles for many occasions as her makeup always seems somehow discreet. I also know the popular Pony Syndrome. I think she is a role-model for many people for what she achieved. She looks good with any kind of makeup which is pretty impressive!

Q. What do you know about Korean Makeup routines or styles?
A. I think what represents Korean makeup is the gradient lip, the “aegyo-sal” trend, and the puppy eyeline. I have used a lot of Korean skincare products since it helped me when I had troubles with my skin. In France, I used to either order Korean makeup online, or more recently to buy it at Sephora, which is similar to Olive Young.
Q. Please explain us what kind of makeup people do in your country.
A. There is no huge trend in France that is specific to the country. As for daily makeup, we would just cover imperfections with a concealer and put a bit of mascara and lipstick, usually nude or colorful to pop. Concerning the differences, French like tanned skin better so they use darker foundation while Koreans use whiter foundations. In France, we think that having tanned skin means that you are healthy and you often go on a vacation in sunny places!
Q. Have you ever used Korean cosmetics? If so, what were your most impressive ones?
A. I am keen on Korean makeup and since I used a lot of it, I cannot remember all the products I tried. But I bought a lot of ETUDE HOUSE and innisfree products. The one product that I love and still use is the APRIL SKIN cushion foundation. It is the best one I have ever tried. It has really good coverage and also feels really light on the skin. I also love 3CE lipsticks. The palette of colors and their matte texture does not make my lips dry.
With globalization and faster communication media, we may think that makeup styles tend to be globalized. Korean makeup is gaining more popularity among Asian countries and starts to gain interest in some western countries as well. However, we have seen that some singularities still exist. The way of applying makeup varies from one country to another as well as the perception and the importance that it has for people over the world. However, whatever your reasons for wearing makeup are, take your brushes and have fun!
