   The leave of absence application procedure has newly changed from this semester. Dongguk University made the revision to directly operate the procedure by the school. As the system became more thorough than before, the number of students, who falsely made medical documents, decreased. However, some students experienced inconvenience from the new system. They had some difficulties after the standard for accepting absence became stricter.

The school began to directly manage absence processing

   Last year, the school received reports that there were students who submitted fake medical documents. After that, the school announced that the students who apply for leave of absence have to fill in a personal information collection agreement from May 1st, 2017. Finally, the school has implemented the altered procedure since March 1st, 2018. To explain the procedure briefly, a student needs to register a leave of absence application on uDrims and after the office of the college approves it, the student submits it to his or her professor. The professor then decides the permission of student's absence. Before the change, students submitted medical documents to the professors in person without going through any special procedure.
   Kim Jae-eun, a team member of The Office of Academic Affairs, explained that the number of forgery of documents noticeably decreased after the new measure was introduced. She mentioned, “In the past, we could not notice whether the students submitted fake medical documents or not. It depended on the professors’ own decision. But now, the school directly manages the application procedure of the leave of absence.”
   The standard for leave of absence, which is now stricter than before, is not that exhaustive compared to that of other universities in Seoul. The team member Kim said,  “Many universities only accept leave of absence when the student is hospitalized or suffer from a legally recognized epidemic. Comparing the previous procedures and the new ones, Donggukians might feel that the rules became tightened. For that point, I think a conversation between the school and the students is needed. We will receive students’ opinions related to the process.”

Some students are confused with the changed system

   Jeon Joo-youn (Freshman, Department of International Trade) mentioned, “I think that the stricter procedure is better for the students who actually care for their attendance. Students who use the system for a wrong purpose should reflect on their actions.” While there are good points like this one about changing the procedure, students’ attendance is being a problem since the system became stricter.
   For example, until last year, watching a soccer game to cheer for a small club of the college was allowed if students submitted a form. However, it is not permitted from this year. Students who did not know the new procedure and already went to watch the game were checked differently depending on the professor. They went to watch the game since they were told by the seniors that their attendance would be fine. The seniors were not aware of the change in procedure.
   Lee Si-woo (Freshman, Department of International Trade) was not satisfied with the new procedure and suggested  alternative. She said, “I think that it is better to check the attendance of students who misused the system than sick students checked as being absent like thesedays. Making the system more complex gives students a hard time to apply and get checked as absent.”

There are discussions about the absence of menstruation and the correction period

   Other than the changed system, there are some issues about the attendance in Dongguk University. Discussions about attendance problems during the correction period and absence due to period pain are going on. First, during the correction period of registering for classes, attendance policy is different depending on professors. Some professors check those, who register later in the period, absent and other preofessors check attend. This makes students confused.
   Moreover, another problem is that the school still did not make a system for officially approving leave of absence yet for period pain. Yun Won-jeong, the Chairperson of the General Coed Student Council (GCSC), said, “I do not understand why the absence for menstruation is not accepted. People who have menstrual pain should not suffer and restrain the pain to go to school. The score depends on the test we take and it shows what students have learned, not the attendance. Approving students for their period is needed.”
   Other than the change in the system, there is a need for debate about the attendance during the correction period of changing classes and approving leave of absence because of the menstruation. The school has tried to make the procedure a fairer system for the students and said they will continue discussing it. Kim Jung-do, the Chairperson of the GSC, said, “We are going through many processes investigating to find a solution. I think that it may be possible to make a conclusion with the school about this issue.”
