During my undergraduate studies, my dream was to get higher education in one of the best universities in the world. I decided to go to South Korea because of its great development and advancement in the field of Science and Engineering especially for the last 20 years. While I was searching for universities in South Korea for my postgraduate studies, I luckily found one interesting research laboratory at Dongguk University that matched my interest. Finally, I got admission in Dongguk University and reached to South Korea on February 28th this year to achieve my goal. That was my first time to be out of my home country, Pakistan. The journey was interesting and exciting.
I have done my bachelor’s degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering from University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan in September 2017. Regarding my life in Dongguk University, I have only spent three months here, but I want to share my time with diverse people because I have faced a lot of experiences here during this brief period. I am satisfied with the campus life and enjoying my research and studies. Also, the education system and the facilities at the campus are fabulous. The campus is located at the center of Seoul, near to the famous Namsan Seoul Tower. There is a beautiful track which leads to the tower from the university. My life here is very smooth, because I have more than 30 Pakistani friends in the campus who guide and lead me everywhere.
However, there is one problem, language barrier. Most of the people feel discomforted when communicating with me especially when I go out of the campus for some work. Yet, I can manage it with some gestures and some words of Korean. Besides, I have a balanced schedule and supportive environment provided by the school administration and faculty here, so I do not feel pressure. I have much time for my studies, research, and other activities such as religious and cultural activities, cricket, gym, and jogging. As Korean foods are different and unfamiliar for me, sometimes I cannot eat. That is why I learned how to cook and prepare my own meal, which is also broad experience along with my studies. I am here doing my work independently which is a great symbol for my upcoming practical life.
As far as my position as a student is concerned here at Dongguk University, I am a Master integrated PhD research student and currently enrolled in the first semester of studies. I am in the research laboratory of Smart Material and Design Lab and work under the supervision of my professor Kim Heung-soo. He is a great person. He really motivated me toward my research and gave me the courage which is very helpful for my career. Also, I have two Korean lab mates, Shin Jae-kyoung and Kim Na-yeon. Both are very cooperative and helpful when I have some problems in the campus. Thanks to them, I do not feel like I am away from my home. Moreover, the faculty members, administration, and students are very supportive and helpful. They direct me whenever I have something that I do not understand. To sum up, I am happy in the campus and I enjoy my studies and research here. I hope that I will spend four years here with good memories and satisfaction.
