   Some students may know friends or celebrities like the singers JeA or Kim Wan-sun who say that they choose to be single and not get married. Previously, there was a custom that everyone should get married. However, recently, many people regard marriage as a choice. As this trend spreads out, some TV programs and cultures are made. The Dongguk Post found out why people choose to be single, how the media handles it, and what kinds of cultures are coming up due to the change.

People who choose to be single are increasing because of various reasons

   According to Daumsoft, a company that analyzes big data, the term “To be single” was mentioned on SNS two thousand times in the year of 2011 and in 2015, it exceeded to 20 thousand times, which is more than ten times. This result shows that more people became interested in being single nowadays.
   There is a difference between “those who choose to be single” and “those who are just single.” People who choose to be single have “will” not to get married. They have several reasons for having this kind of thinking. Jang Jae-sook, the assistant professor, who teaches “Marriage and Family” in Dongguk University, said, “Many people thought that marriage had to be done for emotional stability and many economic reasons. However, there are many ways to have a happy life individually these days due to the development of technology and cultural life. That is why this new trend is coming up.” She added, “YOLO, a life style in which people live for their own happiness, is one of the biggest reasons for those who choose to be single. They want to live for themselves. Also, in terms of economic reason, they think lots of money would be needed for their house and wedding.”
   Park Lee-hyang (Freshman, Department of International Trade) said, “I think that once I get married, there are going to be many things that I have to sacrifice for the family. I do not think that I would like to do that yet.”
   Lim Jae-sun (20) also expressed his thoughts about marriage saying, “I feel like living alone is more comfortable than getting married. I would like to go on dates with my girlfriend, but getting married is a whole different situation." He talked about the sense of responsibility needed, adding, "I do not think that I am ready to raise kids. If I have children, I have to give up some parts of my life because of taking care of them. My thoughts may change in the future, but until now, I would like to live for myself without being restrained.”

Media shows life of people choosing to be single

   As the trend of choosing to be single is widespread, some TV programs about it were made. “Girl Who Feels Happy at Being Single” is a reality program in which many celebrities such as JeA, Kim Wan-sun and Ye-eun who choose to be single appear. They pursue their individual happiness without getting married. They sing, dance, cook, and just enjoy their life, doing what they want to do. Jang Min-seo (Freshman, Economics) of Kyung Hee University, a viewer of this program mentioned, “Seeing that these kinds of programs are made, I can tell that choosing to be single is getting more attention than before. I think this is because of individualism. Most of all, with the spread of choosing to be single, the biggest reason for it is that they do not want to be suppressed by a life of marriage.” She added, “People are social animals. However, sometimes we want to relax without being disturbed by others. These programs reflect this kind of thinking.”

New cultures came out due to the "choosing to be single" syndrome

   “Single wedding” is a new culture for those who chose not to get married. It is an event in which a woman can be shot while wearing a wedding dress and having wedding makeup. In the TV program “Girl Who Feels Happy at Being Single,” some members of the program experienced it. It is made for the women who have dreamed to wear a wedding dress in their life, but do not want to get married. With the single wedding, they can have a chance to wear it while having a nice time with their friends and family just like a normal wedding. As people have their own style, the concept of single wedding can be diverse. In this regard, Choi Eun-jeung, the representative of ‘Here that Flower Road,’ a single wedding film company, said, “There is an increase of women who want to be shot for their single wedding. The concept of shooting depends on what they want to wear. Therefore, not everyone wears a wedding dress. There are various ways of how people get filmed.”
   In addition, clubs for people choosing to be single are increasing. “The Club of Women with One Mind” is an example. It was formed in 1990. Although the thought of choosing to be single occurred to some females in the past, the club was not welcomed at that time. However, for now, there seem to be many women who wants to join the club. Since choosing to be single does not mean that they want to be alone, the club members get along with each other regularly while enjoying each of their lives.

Choosing to be single is a choice for everyone

   Although the reason why people who choose to be single is different, there is one common thing. They respect their own choice. Professor Jang concluded, “When deciding something in their life, happiness has to be a priority. That is why I look at this change of awareness in marriage as a good thing. We are the owners of our lives individually and have the right to choose.”
