In Dongguk University, there are people who take snapshots of Donggukians about their daily university lives. They are called “Bamboo Forest Photographer Team.” They take pictures for their applicants and upload them on SNS. The team gained popularity among students so that their monthly schedule used to be fully booked shortly after the reservation is opened. Also, they recently began to photograph students from other universities, too. The Dongguk Post interviewed the Bamboo Forest Photographer Team to listen to their stories of recording students’ campus life.
Q. Please introduce yourselves and your team.
Su-hong: I am Cho Su-hong, “Photographer No.1” in the Bamboo Forest Photographer Team. I take photos and manage our SNS channels. Our team captures students’ most beautiful times by providing a free snapshot service to Donggukians. There are four members in our team; three are photographers and one is a model.
Su-hyeon: My name is Bae Su-hyeon and I am “Photographer No.4.” In our team, “Photographer No.1” takes photos with both digital and film cameras. “Photographer No.3” only uses a film camera and I take digital photographs only. These explain the roles of our team members.
Q. What activities does your team do? Please tell us about them.
Su-hong: We mainly take snapshots for the students of Dongguk University and manage the Facebook page and Instagram account. Moreover, we take images of Dongguk University and sometimes hold special events called “beon-gae,” which is to suddenly open photography schedule just before hours. Also, we had distributed postcards with our works.

Q. How was this team made? Were there any reasons for putting team together?
Su-hong: At first, I regularly uploaded photographs of Dongguk University in the Facebook page “Dongguk Bamboo Forest” (a page that students share their ideas and discuss any topics they want to). Then one day, I got interested in taking pictures of people so I made this channel individually in August last year. Our team name, “Bamboo Forest Photographer Team,” came from this history. After that, I selected our team members this year and we are working together now.
Q. Can you tell us how each of you got interested in taking photographs.
Su-hyeon: I became interested in taking photos naturally, studying art. I thought it is quite meaningful since I can record enjoyable and favorite moments so that the memory can be more vivid. I envied people who are good at taking pictures but there was only little chance to learn it. I started this team activity and at first, I liked to take scenery pictures. However, taking pictures of people is also appealing because it enables me to get along and be familiar with others.
Su-hong: While I was in Barcelona as an exchange student, I traveled to Iceland. On the last day of the trip there, I saw the aurora in the sky and tried to take a picture of it with my cell phone. However, I could not capture the scene well, which made me upset, so I decided to buy my own camera. After then, using the camera, I could be aware of which type of photograph I prefer. Also, I started to take portraits in earnest. It is related to the reason I began this activity.
Q. What were your most pleasurable experiences in this team?
Su-hong: I was very impressed by a student of Kyonggi University, whom I took a picture of last month, since she was the most passionate applicant I have ever met. She brought three sets of clothes and two more shoes, sneakers and high heels, for the photograph. Moreover, she even borrowed her friend’s student ID card to prepare for the situation of getting into the school library with me! So, I took almost a thousand of pictures that day. I had to back-up the camera memory card during the schedule, although I had emptied it before. This is not the end. When I opened “bun-gae” event with the theme of lotus lanterns lately, she came from her school to Dongguk University, from Suwon to Seoul, for new photographs.
Su-hyeon: I want to share my first experience of photographs as a member of this team. On the first day, when I was just asked to join this team, I went to take a night scene of Hangang River with our team members. That day, I found that digital cameras can capture the scene in different ways than a cell phone camera. So I got really interested in taking photos with my camera. It worked like a charm! I realized if I can handle the camera well, I could take photos just like the real view or even better than that.
Q. Do you remember any reactions the models had made which impressed you the most?
Su-hong: I heard one when I was taking pictures of a couple at a cafe in Chungmuro. One of the two said, “I think it is very special for us to have our photo taken by a photographer. Compared to ordinary times, now I feel like eating lobster, not ramen.” This sentence was so impressive to me that I remember the whole scene even now!
Su-hyeon: I do not have a special memory about a certain reaction, but I can say that I was very proud when my applicants told me that the photo I had taken for them was the best shot ever. Additionally, when any of them directly changed their messenger profile image into the picture of mine, I felt great!
Q. Did you have difficulties doing this activity? If so, what were those?
Su-hong: Even though every photography schedule is not easy, I like the procedure itself from taking photos to delivering my work to the applicants. When I first made the “Bamboo Forest Photographer” channel, I became a little tired since I was holding down my job and working as a photographer at the same time. I had nothing to do but just look at the shine of the sunlight outside sitting on my seat in the workplace, which was the grief of office workers. Also, I had a limitation on my schedule while doing the activity alone.
Su-hyeon: I feel exhausted when I cannot get out to take photographs during exam and with too many assignments. However, the most depressing situation is when my work does not satisfy me and my applicants. This usually occurs when the weather gets bad. For example, in this spring, I planned to take portraits with cherry blossoms but because of rain and wind, the petals had already fallen.
I always want to give good pictures to our models because not only me but also the applicants arranged time and prepared for the photography beforehand. For this reason, when there are uncontrollable variables, especially bad weather, I get depressed.
Q. What are the best things about the team?
Su-hyeon: Many people say that our 20s have the most beautiful moments. I think the reason why many students like our team is that we can help them remember their most beautiful times in university life. Plus, when we want to take image shots with our friends outside, we should pay much money to the photographer. So, of course we cannot take their portraits just like the professionals, I guess the students view us more favorably.
Su-hong: When I first made this snapshot service, Dongguk University lacked its own contents compared to other universities such as Yonsei University and Korea University. So I thought it was in a good condition to create a new service or channel. Also, I thought it would enhance Donggukians’ pride by making a service that takes photos only for them when it is combined with our university’s distinct features like the lotus lantern festival.
Q. Do you have any messages you want to give to Donggukians?
Su-hong: First of all, we always thank Donggukians who enjoy our photos and are interested in our team. Actually, we are going to officially recruit new teammates soon. In this period, it is certain that we need more photographers. I regard that anyone who is interested in taking photos and has his or her own camera can join our team.
Su-hyeon: I sometimes feel sad when some of the applicants give up to be our models before making an appointment. We do not discriminate students based on their appearance. It is not true that only pretty or handsome students can be our models. I wish many Donggukians to come closer to us. We will be faithful to keep each of your beautiful moments now and forever.
