Problems of the Dongguk's ESP

Dongguk University,
Sophomore in department of Business Management

In global society to be successful in our career I believe most people have to study foreign languages hard and train international competitiveness. As we see many news saying that it is very hard to get a job and companies require appliers to be fluent in English. In this situation, we, the students have to not only get good grades in school but also have to train our international competitiveness (foreign language skills) to go out in the world.

As I like studying and learning English, I was interested in exchange student program since I entered the university. So I investigated many things about exchange student program and I found that the Dongguk University offers very few opportunities to students to study abroad. So I also investigated other schools to compare with the Dongguk.

Most of the universities send exchange students to the world of speaking English, Japanese, Chinese, French, German and Russian. But the Dongguk sends students to only three language areas-English, Chinese and Japanese. The Dongguk has to expand the number of students and languages. Last year, only 93 students went abroad to study in foreign language and this number is a comparatively low value.

The Korea University dispatched 598 students to many countries. While the Dongguk sends students to only two countries (English-spoken), the Korea sends to many English spoken countries and universities-Australia, Canada, Hong-Kong, USA, Finland, Great British, India, New-Zealand, Singapore and so on. If students enter the Korea's site, they can search an appropriate school for themselves (considering TOEFL score, the term, cost etc.). The Donngguk has to increase the numbers of universities and countries because there aren't only two countries speaking English such as USA and Canada.

The Yonsei University dispatched 788 students to different language used areas evenly. If the students enter the site they can find out the average scores of TOEFL to be an exchange student. However, the Dongguk, it's vague to know the exact standard to be selected as an exchange student. In my opinion, the Dongguk has to offer many informations about the ESP more easily to approach.

The Kyunghee University sent 78 students to 38 different schools in 17 different countries (only accounting English used). The school made a cyber-club for students to share their informations and advices. And the Choongang University offers a TOEFL class for the students applying ESP. These will be very helpful for the students preparing not only for the ESP but also thinking about the other ways to study abroad.

I compared the Dongguk with other universities in Korea and I found out that the Dongguk offers very few opportunities. The school has to change in global because it's the era of globalization. We can't stop in this way and remain only in Korea. If the school offers more programs and encourage students to be more enthusiastic in their work, I believe that the Dongguk will improve drastically.

How about studying foreign languages and trying for the exchange student program?

※All the number values of exchange students include not only exchange students but also visiting students. And all the numbers are provided by each university's manager.
