Indaba for Solving Dongguk University Cleaning Worker Issue was held at the Main Auditorium on March 23rd, 6 P.M. The General Student Council (GSC) hosted this event to listen to the school and the cleaning workers’ each opinion about this ongoing issue and to resolve students' doubts. The meeting place and schedule was rearranged several times due to adjusting schedule and place with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions. Only officials of the school and cleaning service company participated in the indaba: the team manager of the Team of General Affairs, Kim Jong-yun, the deputy manager of that, service suppliers including Taega BM and Green C&S. Kim Jung-do, the Chairperson of the GSC, also attended as the chairperson of the debate. The workers did not show up since they clarified that if the Vice president for the Office of Planning does not participate in it, they will not attend the indaba.
At the opening of the debate, Kim Jung-do mentioned that he was informed the absence of the workers in the indaba the day at around 4 P.M. He said, “Not every side attended, but we already announced the debate schedule. Also, participants can speak their positions at the debate and I can ask a few questions as the chairperson, so we decided to proceed it.” In the situation of continuing conflicts of opinion, each person concerned took time, five minutes for the school authorities and three minutes were given to Taega BM and Green C&S to explain about some doubts.
Firstly, the team manager of the Team of General Affairs felt sorry for the absence of the workers and explained the four doubts that the union insisted. He said, “The contract article that cleaning workers should not sign up for labor union is not true. Also, It is nonsense that the school rigged the grade when selecting the service company, and the rumor that they will be fired, due to retirement age problems when contracting with Taega BM, is not true.”
Then, the officials of the cleaning service company followed. The president of Taega BM explained he attempted to contact the cleaning workers several times to talk about the situation, but he failed to do so and was refused by them. Moreover, he handed out an evidence document that Taega BM strived for upgrading cleaning workers' working condition. A guard from Green C&S also said, “The workers, who do not go on strike, are now working hard and cannot rest at their break time. They are asking to stabilize the work.”
At the followed free discussion time, Chairperson Kim asked four questions to the panel as a host of this indaba and the representative of Donggukians. After that, six students lively asked questions about this issue like “Why did the Chairperson Kim not show up when cleaning workers shaved their hair, and the news conference was held?” Kim replied, “I was not able to be there because of my personal business that day, but at other times I had many meetings with both parties.”
