On February 25th, “Neunggeum Sarang,” which is a study room in the building of Social Sciences, newly opened after construction. I-SPACE, which will be used for various purposes such as seminars and lectures was made in “Neungeum Sarang.” However, there have been controversy that the construction began without asking students’ opinions.
Last November, the Student Council of the College of the Social Science recognized that the construction of “Neunggeum Sarang” was planned. However, the project was revealed by the workers of the school, not the Office of the College of the Social Science, which has the responsibility to inform the student council of the plan first. Criticizing the unilateral decision of the construction, the 31st Operation Committee of the College of the Social Science suggested to the Office of the College of the Social Science that the construction should be decided after students’ vote. However, the office did not take a vote and the construction was decided at the end.
After it was determined, the Operation Committee submitted several request proposals to the Office of the College of the Social Science which included sharing the process of the construction. Regarding these requests, on December 28th, the office announced that there was no information to share since they did not receive any information from the Office of Facilities Maintenance, either.
On January 2nd, a notice informing that the construction of “Neunggeum Sarang” started was posted in front of the space. To know about the construction plan, the Operation Committee visited the Office of Facilities Maintenance. However, the office stated that they already delivered the data to the Office of the College of the Social Science. For this reason, the Operation Committee requested the information from the Office of the College of the Social Science until January 9th. Nevertheless, even though the appointed day, January 9th, had already passed, the Operation Committee could not get any information of the construction.
Park Kyoung-gun, the Chairperson of the Emergency Planning Committee of the College of the Social Science, said, “This was not the first time when the school started the projects arbitrarily without asking students’ agreement. The school has been ignoring students’ opinion.”
Eventually, the office accepted the 31st Operation Committee’s suggestion. “Neunggeum Sarang” increased the seats of the lap-top room from 40 seats to 60 seats. Also, they received a promise from the office that they will reflect the students’ opinions about “Neunggeum Sarang.”
